150,000+ Camry LE 1992, good tips to keep her running strong?
I have the Haynes repair manual for the Camry. Is there anything else I can do thats not in the maintenance schedule to keep her running strong?
~thanks~ |

Other than keeping the engine itself clean, the single most important thing you can do is the oil/fluid changes.

I have seen many Camrys like yours with 200,000 plus miles on them still running strong. The number one killer of these engines (catastrophic failure) is lack of oil changes. These engines are notorious for sludge build up due to lack of oil changes. Change the oil every 3000 miles, or even more often than that. A do-it-yourselfer can change oil for $10. It's a small price to pay to have a car run 'forever'. There are thousands of things that can go wrong with your car. Anything man made is going to eventually fail. All you can do is maintain the things that are serviceable. Change the oil, transmission fluid, and coolant, keep the tune-up parts in good order, and keep on driving.

To add to what Erndog1369 said, I would also flush the brake fluid every 2-3 years or 30,000 miles. This will help the hydraulic parts of the brake system (calipers, wheel cylinders, proportioning valve, and antilock brake parts if you have them) lasting a long time. Brake fluid is hydroscopic; that means it picks up moisture over time. It's this moisture along with the dirt that get's in to the brake system that eventually causes failure of the hydraulic components. Flushing out the brake system is really cheap maintenance. You can get a large can of brake fluid at Walmart for around $4 and that should be plenty to do the flushing.

I have a 1990 camry with over 190,000 miles on it. It hasn't been taken care of well. The spark plugs have been changed twice in the last 110k miles. I wouldn't recommend this lol just keep maintenance up like the above said and yours will be running strong. People cant believe the year of my car because it runs like new. I keep thinking on getting a newer car but I can't justify it.
