inexpensive performance chips

this place i guess buys mugen chips and the like and decodes them and makes their own. they range from $35-40. my bro bought one for his crx and it gave him 6+ hp when he tested it with his g-tech.

i got one for my 95 civic ex (d16z6) with ecu p28. it was a bitch installing it caus it came with absolutely no instructions. i called my bro to see how he did his. on integra and crx ecu's the performance chip replaces an already existing chip in the ecu, all he had to do was take out the factory stock chip and put in the performance one and he was all set. not so for the civic ecu. i had no idea what to do, there was a place on the circut board where it would fit but there was no chip already there. so i found a guy on ebay that sells similar chips and he sent me directions on the install. i had to put in the chip into the empty spot on the ecu and then add this other integrated circut chip and a resistor and a wire in another place. but stupid me didn't read the directions correctly and took out another chip i needed and broke it in the process. my car didn't run at all and i'm S.O.L thinking i now need to buy a new ecu but i found on radioshack.com they have the chip i destroyed and the other one i needed that didnt come with the performance chip. after 3 days of my car not working i got the chips and put em in and everything worked ok. thank god!

i don't know how much hp i got from all this mess but i can deffinately feel more power. probably got btw 3-6+ hp. v-tec kicks in now at 5000 rpm too, so that is way cool. it also has redline at 9200 i think but im not gonna find out. so anyway $35 a good investment but you gotta know what you are doing or you'll fuck up your ecu and need a new one.

if any of you decide to get a civic chip you can hit me up for the instructions.

HOLY SHIET a 92,000 rpm redline? gosh damn! Tahts oine helluva chip there!!... heh, i know thats a typo.. The only cars I know of that Gain a LOT form chips are Vw's and Audis, them things gain like 20+hp from a chip...

Who buys and sells Mugen ECUs for $35-40??!?!/! Wow...VTEC engagement at 5000rpm! Amazing - how does that help? Redline? at 9200rpm? (fix typo) Redline is the maximum recommended rev area for u to rev your motor - no way u can change that with a chip.

i think he meant 9,200 rpm and by then in any civic ever you will need a totally different valvetrain. sorry but 14,000 plus a cheap chip doesnt get you near an s2000.......period. bro you better have a set of toda c's in a b16a with a balanced engine and some real good finger crossing if you ever hope to not blow your motor up at that rpm. have you gotten different cams, valve springs and retainers? that p28 ecu...how is it doing with knock control and secondary intake runner support? whats your a/f ratio like? how about the ignition timing? oh and how did you get your maps onto a blank chip.................oh by the way how are your injectors doing at about 110% duty? whats your fuel pressure like?

i think it does not change the redline but must dis-engage the rev limiter or something. no i havent done any big mods to go with this chip like diff valves or springs or any of that stuff. i'm just saying: $35 for 3-6 hp? Yes, please! where else are you gonna get hp for that cheap?

Have you read the cluepon there buddy? It's a hint. The revlimiter is put in by honda to protect you, the user, from fucking up your engine. Removing it with a stock valvetrain will get you about as much power as a type r sticker.

why do you think that i'm trying to rev my car up that high? i'm not stupid. the chip just allows you to do so if you want. it's not like the extra hp doesnt kick in until 7000+ rpm, its there all the time. the chip works fine on a stock engine, but if you have re-built the motor to take it the chip will allow you to rev that high.

Actually having your rev limiter raised on a stock B16 isn't that bad. The horsepower fall-off is much more gradual past its peak power point than the horsepower gain when downshifting. What I mean is if you rev a little higher, your still making more power than if you were to downshift and be at 5600 rpm's. But like you pointed out a new valvetrain is needed for constant higher-rpm's. A chip is almost absolutely useless on a stock engine. Their not needed until you get your head built and fuel system upgraded along with a multitude of other things. And your 3-6 horsepower comes from the new fuel map most likely. Theres no other variables to change to add horsepower within your "chip". Therefore you might'd as well buy an SAFC and change it yourself. And yeah, go ahead and use that coupon anytime you want

you guys can shit on me all you like about it not doing me any good on a stock engine, the bottom line for me is my car has more power. i can feel it, you can tell me it wont make a difference all you want but i know it does.

compared to the price breakdown of dollars to hp this is more cost effective than an intake, header, cam, sprocket or about anything else. if there is something else out there that will give me this kind of hp gain for $35 I sure would like to know about it.

i'm not trying to sound like i know what the specifics are for what the chip does and does not do but it gives you more power and having v'tec kick in at 5000 instead of 5500 rpm is pretty cool and almost worth it alone.

besides, who would buy a mugen chip $1500 and reprogram it and sell it for $35.. i mean.. c'mon!

oh.. and g-tech said my stock 160hp Si was 173hp, so you see what confidence I have in a g-tech for hp rating
