K&N Filtercharger questions

Hi, I'm not a big mod guy. All I have is a turbo timer on my 97 GST for proper cooldown. I'm looking into a new airfilter in hope to gain a "little" hp and perhaps throttle response. Hope you guys can answer my questions.

1) Is K&N filtercharger a good one? Compared to GReddy and HKS? It is cheaper.

2) Will this make my MPG worse? Increased air means increased gas to match right?

3) I need to reset my ECU to get a benefit of the more air?

4) Is it "really" worth it? Since I don't have, and probably won't have, other mod on my car.

5) I keep reading that these high flow filters will give you a better turbo whine and BOV noise, is this so? How much louder is it? I'm actually not looking for a big noise. I can hear a slight whine of the turbo now, but I don't want everyone staring at my car when I drive by.

X) What does DSM stand for? I see it all the time on Eclipse related forums...

Thanks in advance!

Re: K&N Filtercharger questions

-if you're getting the filtercharger, then no you won't hear much difference in your bov sound.
-if you're getting the fipk (k&n cone filter) then you'll hear a slightly increased sound.

you should experience a very slight increase in mpg.
no need to reset the ecu as you'll be essentially changing the filter only. the filtercharger is just a drop in filter.

Re: K&N Filtercharger questions

Yes, I am talking about the cone one. They call that the filtercharger too...? So reset ECU on this one then?

(the last one on the page).

Is this a good price by the way?

I went w/ the Apexi Dual funnel intake, no need to worry about oiling it or anything.

Re: K&N Filtercharger questions

LOL... ahhhhh, the best filter...

1. i think the GReddy is the best for filtration or flow, and the K&N FPIK is in second.

2. i think it will improve based on the fact you are reliving restriction, therefore increasing economy.

3. the ECU 'learns' itself to changing conditions. no ned to do anything to it.

4. yes, because i highly doubt you will stop modding at that point.

5. yes, you will be able to hear it much more and peeps will look at you with envy, awe, and jealousy.

6. Diamond Star Motors and it refers to Eclipses and Talon's 1g and 2g's and some Galant's. because of a lot of redundant systems on these cars, they are all refered to as DSM for reduced confusion [basicaly].

i never thought i would be saying this, but why don't you sell your turbo model for a N/T model. you seem to want to go faster but you don't as well. why not go a little faster and make some $$ while you are at it?

Is it me, or is GReddy the same design as HKS.

Re: K&N Filtercharger questions

Well, I'm not sure if I'll do more mods... I get in these moods and then it fades. This started again because we just bought my wife a BMW and the rear wheel drive feel goooood.... I'm just a bit jeoulous now...

I do notice that I get better gas milage whenever I change to a new airfilter, so I'm thinking this might be good to add a little power and milage at the same time. But if more air gets in the engine, it "needs" more fuel right? So shouldn't it decrease mpg rating?

And when the turbo whine is louder, how much louder? I want a fast car, but not a louder car... Just the way I am.

BlackShadowTSi: where did you buy it for $64?!??!

Thanks again.

Re: K&N Filtercharger questions

Yea I meant the new GReddy Airinx... they both have the same "make up"...

New GReddy Airinx...
HKS SMF...

I guess they are different but they both have the same kind of base (one is metal) then they both have a 2 layer filter and then they both have a cage.

Maybe it is just me...
