Turbo or supercharged
i have a 01 civic SI and am thinking about getting a turbo or supercharger. i wanted to get a supercharger because of the power it gives through all gears but a friend of mine can hook me up with a turbo kit under 1K. so i was wanted to know what the best one would be to do.

Re: Turbo or supercharged
Turbo. More potential. And with proper tuning, turbo lag can be reduced.

Re: Turbo or supercharged
depends on what you are going to be doing
drag racing would benefit from the turbo because the power it makes is exponential the more boost you have auto x would benefit from the supercharger since you spend the majority of you time in the low rpm range (low rpm not good for turbo unless you get a tiny TINY turbo) Matt |

i'm thinking about 350 to 400WHP

For that much HP you would need a huge turbo, and crank up that boost! And you would also have to do a lot of engine work to make sure it can handle the high boost... 350-400 is a lot of HP.

not really, a huge turbo is not necesary, a T3/T4 sould be able to give him fairly easily 400hp

Re: Turbo or supercharged
i agree, of course, the hp you make is dependant on so many variables it's not even funny.. making over 300 hp in a little honda engine takes some serious work and tuning.. it's not your every day job... for most of us that is

go to www.cybernationmotorsports.com and they will explain to you why one would want to go turbo in contrast to supercharger....it's all about the poosh!!!

Re: Turbo or supercharged
Approximating ~15% drivetrain losses, 400whp is 450-470hp at the flywheel. That is a LOT of power for a 4cyl, not that it is difficult to do, but it will take a stout motor. My 5.7L v8 puts out about that with 8psi boost, you can imagine what kind of boost and internals you'd need for an engine a third of that size. its gonna take a high redline and definately over 20psi to get that on a 4cyl. If this is a daily driver, I hope you turn down the boost while you're not at the track... 250whp for a FWD daily driver would scoot along nicely. you'll have all sorts of fun traction problems if you have much more than that, especially if you're drivin on wet roads. Hell, I have traction problems and I've got a 3100lb rear wheel drive car with leaf springs, and wide tires! But some people(myself included) like to have their everyday cars to be a challenge just to keep on the road...

Re: Turbo or supercharged
I doubt that you can achieve 400 fwhp on a b16a without using high octain race fuel. Your engine will not be reliable running 20+psi and you will have to put tens of thousands into the buildup and tuning of the engine just to prevent detonation. A more realistic figure for a daily driven si is about 250 fwhp. Thats a lot of power for the 1.6 L. I dont think you can make that much power without changing your compression. Correct me if im wrong but the si's stock compression is too high to be running more than 8psi of boost
