96 GA 2.4L hesitating at high speed accelleration
I have a 96 Grand Am SE 2.4L Auto, recently it has been hesitating when I accellerate at higher speeds, (usually 80km or higher). It feels like its actually misfiring. It only does it on a quick accelleration. If I accell VERY gradually, its no problem. When it starts to mis I find that the only way to get the power back is to punch the throttle.
It generally only does this when the car is warm. Anyone have any ideas? Jay Warburton |

Re: 96 GA 2.4L hesitating at high speed accelleration
Sounds sorta familiar. My 96 2.4 also was hesitating bad on a long fairly steep incline unless I got a good head of steam up. I wasn't sure if it was an ignition problem, or fuel delivery thing. I ended up putting a bottle of SynPower Complete Fuel System Treatment from valvoline thru it, and it at least seems to have improved significantly. Hasn't completely solved the trouble, but it is better. Might be worth a try anyway. Good luck

hmmm ill definitly give that a try.. if it helps at all then it must indicate that its a fuel problem... maybe an injector?

Could be various things I would suppose. This particular product is supposed to help clean up everything including the injector's I believe.

You may also want to check the condition of your spark plug insulators. If they show any signs of carbon tracking or rust on the insulators (from the plug boot springs) then the spark may be arcing to the engine block. Also look for cracks or carbon scoring on the coil housing where it connects to the boots.

Re: 96 GA 2.4L hesitating at high speed accelleration
Think of it this way jay , you were on the right track sayin it gets laggy at high speeds when it is warm. The throttle body and intake manifolds get hot and heat up the intake air , less air gets jammed in and makes car sluggish. I get the same problem at times , car just needs to cool off. The poopy thing bout that is it takes 1-2 hours to cool off enough to make any difference cus as the engine cools off the heat dissapates upwards to the throttle body and intake manifolds making them the last engine components to cool off.

ok i solved the problem.. i changed the air filter, fuel filter, plugs and cleaned up the boot springs and what ever the problem was it is solved now. I should have done all that in the first place, but oh well.
The thing is now it seems to have lost some power.. i'm not sure why but the accelleration is smooth now but doesn't seem as fast. Any ideas? Also has anyone found any good parts stores other than a GM dealer that sells the ignition coil boot set? I need to replace mine very soon, they are getting a bit torn and one is actually cracked. Whats the rough cost usually? (I'm in north bay/ mississauga, ontario) Thanks Everyone Jay |

Re: 96 GA 2.4L hesitating at high speed accelleration
Jay, I was able to pick up a set spark plug boots at my local NAPA store 2 months ago. They were about $27US. There's a store at 896 1st Ave E in North Bay and in Mississauga at 19-2273 Dundas St W.
