99 explorer trouble starting when cold

I have a 99 explorer with 67,000 miles on it and every morning( 35 degrees outside) when I turn the key it tries to start and then shuts off. The only way I can keep it started is to give it a little gas. I have changed the fuel filter and new plugs and wires. But every morning after sitting through the night it will not start. Tried fuel injection cleaner also. After it warms up it starts no problem, would appreciate any advice. Thanks

Could be IAT (intake air temp) or coolant temperature sensor bad. That would tell the enngine computer to run a leaner mixture than it should. More likely it is a sticking IAC valve that does not allow the engine to rev up on its own. IAC is located on the side of the throttle body under the plastic cover. Two wires and it removes with two screws. Spray some throttle body cleaner in it and see if that improves it. The IAC has a lot of different problems asociated with it. Does it idle real low when the engine is warm? If it is still functioning electrically, you can remove the electrical connector and the engine will idle down to a point that it almost stops. Some find it easier to replace it for about $65.

my 2000 explorer has been doing the same thing for almost a year now...I don't know the cause b/c some days it is fine and some days it won't idle... I thought it only did that when it was rainy, but then it started doing it when it was hot or cold, or sunshiny... If you figure it out PLEASE let me know b/c I am tired of having to drive with 2 feet, one on the gas (at all times) and one on the brake!!!!

Opera House: It idles fine once it has warmed up( 1 minute) about 700 rpms. I will try what you have suggested. if you can think of anything else please free fell to tell me. Thanks

I had the same problem with my 2000 about a month ago. I live in New England and thought it might just be the negitive digits but after a week i took it in to work to scan it. It turned out it was the coolent temp. sensor (for the computer). A somewhat easy and cheep fix. For like $25 a new OEM sensor from FORD. Make sure if you take the head gasket off to re seat it properly or you'll have one hell of a vacume leak.
