Thinking of selling my Eclipse GST and looking into MR2's..

Well i have a 96 gst modded that does pretty good 12's and i'm going to sell it as soon as the tranny is back in. I'm undecided as to what car I want, i was thinking Acura GSR then i realized they were weak then i thought of an Audi A4 1.8t cuz of the AWD but those are weak...to make a long story short i pretty much change the car i want day to day, i'm weird about my cars....So now i'm thinking of getting a 2nd gen mr2, like a 94 or something. So can someone help me out as to pros and cons of the car? Any info is useful. Are they crappy, do they break down easy etc. One thing i really need answered though is that i've found an mr2 with 110k mi for about 4000$ and i'm going to get the motor rebuilt, i'm sure a stock rebuild would cost me around 2 grand but with an upgraded turbo, internals etc i'm wondering how much that would cost? Anyone have any ideas? Sorry if this sounds a little ignorant. My ideas are kinda scattered. Thanks

Re: Thinking of selling my Eclipse GST and looking into MR2's..

if you are going to do a full re build with internals, upgrade turbo, manifold, the whole nine, expect to spend $7k-10k. I had to Eclipse turbos, one running 11.5 and the other running 12.7. it is a COMPLETELY different car. the mr2 is a real sports car where as the eclipse is a sports coupe, and well the audi and that integra, blah. the integra is reliable but far from being fast unless you do a motor build and turbocharge it. if you are going to do a rebuild, then i wouldnt worry much, just make sure everything else is in good working condition. My car has 142k miles and it hauls pretty nice. My last 1/4 was a 11.9@122. my motor is fairly new but old cars are well, old cars. im starting to get little rattling sounds here and there. you'll enjoy the mr2. just make sure you get a turbo one! lol. and expect to have a harder time finding parts than the eclipse and they are a bit more expensive but IMO toyota has way better build quality than mitsu anyday.

I wouldn't assume you need to rebuild.

I bought Hyde with 180,000 miles ... motor never opened.
The motor has still enver been opened and I am at 195,700 miles with 72 1/4 mile passes, close to 20 dyno pulls and lots of abusive driving (including autocrosses).

I urge you to check out my Site and also register on here:

Re: Thinking of selling my Eclipse GST and looking into MR2's..

Thanks for the info guys! I've been reading a lot on the mr2s lately.. so much that i was dreaming about them lol...one thing i'm worried about is the finding parts for them cuz its hard enough to find parts for my eclipse and they do cost me but its breaking down all the time so maybe the mr2 wont break down as much lol....Yea, i planned on getting the turbo. and to my understanding there is a turbo, twin turbo and a n/t? Either of u guys know any sites on the internet that specialize in mr2 performance?

From the factory there was only a turbo option and a non-turbo.
The factory turbo is a "Twin entry" turbocharger and people constantly screw up and call it a "Twin turbo".

It is NOT.

There is only one twin turbo MR2 that I know of in the U.S. and it was definetly not done by the factory

If you think finding parts for your eclipse was hard then youll have an even harder time finding parts for your mr2. haha. I sold my shop to a dsm tuner and parts are plentiful. Depending on the car that you get, if in good condition, you might not need a rebuilt like hyde. On my car, i had a blown headgasket and i figured id do the whole bottom end while the motor was out. unfortunately you can not get a new mr2 turbo anymore so it just depends on the car that you get. some are well kept and some have been abused. Where do you live? My bro in law just bought a lotus so he is selling his 91 turbo which is in PERFECT condition. its got like 80k original miles.
