Question I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

95 T-Bird
Check Engine light is constantly on. Car runs great. But the constant light makes me want to get out of the car and lay down in the freeway.
Auto-shop said it was EGR. LIght came on again 5 minutes after leaving shop.
Have replaced EGR, checked sensor connections, etc....etc....
Thinking about replacing sensor on air filter. Not sure.
I must be missing something.....anyone have recommendations?

Re: I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

I have the same problem. Have had it checked, but with no luck. Don't worry about it, I don't think its anything. I have been told some cars do that over a certain amount of miles.

The check engine light is for emissions don't worry about it my old 92 did it for the whole time I owned it so don't worry about it. It works the same for a 95

Re: I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

It could be the oxygen sensors on the exhaust. I saw one car that showed a bad mass air sensor but still did not fix the problem. Come to find out one of the O2 sensors was bad. I offer this as a possible place to look. No promises.

Re: I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

You don't state what the shop actually did to diagnose your problem, but you need to know what they SHOULD have done. They should have connected a diagnostic analyzer that plugs in under the dash. This analyzer will "read" the error codes that are present in your car's computer (the PCM, Powertrain Control Module). After checking the error codes, they would find one or more possible reasons that your check engine light is on.

If they didn't use that process, then they just took a wild guess and sold you something that you probably didn't need. Find a shop and ask if they can read the codes for you. Nothing more - just read the codes. You can easily learn the meaning of the codes on the internet. Better yet, go to Auto Zone - they will read the codes for free in the hope that you might buy the replacement part from them. Let me know what happens.

Re: I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

No I didn't because I figured that it would have been assumed that it was hooked up to an analyzer otherwise I could not have said, "it showed a bad mass air sensor." And, the analyzer never showed the bad O2 sensor even when we tried another analyzer.

Re: I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

Clean the EGR passages in the lower intake.

Basically, you unbolt the inlet elbow (upper intake) from the lower intake at the rear of the engine, and clean the crud out of the EGR channels in the lower intake, and reassemble. This *can* also be caused by a cracked/broken EGR feed tube, but typically that's not the cause.

It LOOKS much harder than it really is.

Re: I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

ive got a 95 manual and after changing the clutch i had a check engine light that would light up about 3 to 5 minutes after start up. the code was( i think) 332 egrvalve opening not detected. trace the blue vacumn tube from the egr valve over and down the back of the engine. i removed the plastic peice under the wipers, made it easier. it goes to a valve called a pfe. this valve tells the computer what the egr valve is doing so it can adjust everything it adjust. there is a pink vacumn tube attached to the blue where it goes into this valve. it comes back up to a vacumn block. these tubes are plastic and prone to deterieration. unwrap them and check for breaks. i broke one of mine checking it.check all the hoses coming off the vacumn block too. make sure the wires are hooked to the pfe valve also. fixed mine

Wink Check Eng. Lt, Rough Accelertion

post about rough acceleration & check engine light. My 95 T-Bird w V-6
had terrible acceleration when cold. OK when warm. But always has a "Dead spot" on light throttle. Did the tune up thing. Did the Power Fule injector clean thing. Was finally diagnosed by local shop (Stuart,FL) with bad "control module". $160 for the part at FORD only. Problem solved. Runs great.

Re: I am in 'Check Engine' Hell

Hi I am in the same Check ENgine and I hope its not hell for me.
Pals I have to ask you 2 things. I bought my T Bird ( I call it my Thunderboy !) JUST LAST WEEK .

-- Its a 96 T Boy . 101K miles
I drove from OH to MI and on the interstate the Check engine light turned on half way down the road. SINCE then it has turned on. I DID A DOAGNOSTIC CHECK AND THE MECH TOLD ME THE CODE TELLS ITS COMING FROM "BOTH SIDES". SOMETHING SYMMETRICAL FROM THE SIDES THROWING THE CODE ON. ANY GUESS AT THIS ? ALSO SOMETIMES WHEN I START THE CAR , JUST WHEN AT THE TIME OF START IT KIND OF PUDDLES AROUND SLOWLY inspite of giving the gas , THEN PICK UP ABRUPTLY AND STARTS MOVING. IS THIS A DIFFERENT PROB OR THE SAME PROB?

-- Paid $3300 for it on auctions ? was that worth ...or just too much

PLEASE HELP...........MY SWEATED BUCKS ARE INTO THIS CAR.

THANKS
SAM
