Clutch burning smell

I was racing my friend tonight in my 97 GXE 5speed, and the streets were wet. And for some reason I was not letting go of the clutch after each shifts completely. I thought I was but I guess my foot was still on the very tip of the petal. So my engine would be reving in between 5-6k rpms for a couple of seconds each time I was trying to shift. After racing twice, I smelt a very bad burning smell coming from my car. That had to have been the clutch right? Could I have been messing up my car really badly in between each shift?

Sorry, I know this sounds stupid, but I think I was just really nervous. It was one of my first races.
