1999-2000 Cruise control switches

Does anyone know how to remove the cruise control switches from the steering wheel. I had my wheel off and only a cover from the back can be removed. There is no floating horn pad.

I saw a small torx nut but it was very difficult to get at and there was only one visable. (and only for one set of switches) I think this torx screw may be for disassembling the switches once removed from the steering wheel.

I thought that perhaps some sort of clip held the switrch assemblies on but I want to be certain as these types of clips are often easily broken.

IIRC- the entire wheel cover/hub has to be replaced. The switches are integrated with the cover. Check eBay, you should be able to find some assemblies there.

Thanks but Ford sells the switch assemblies so they are replaceable. I visited a dealer to try and look at one but they need to order them.

Yes................but I want to remove the ones I have because I can probably repair them. I cannot buy the news ones to see how to remove them because they are non-returnable (Ford policy on electrical parts.......) and they cannot show me one because they need to order them from the depot.

So that all said my original question is does anyone know how to remove them........?

If anyone has been following this post I thought I would provide a conclusion.

On the 99 and 2000 steering wheels with the non-floating horn pad the cruise control switches can be pryed out from the front. Care must be taked to disconnect the negative battery cable (to disable the airbag) and care to not damage the steering wheel. I used a letter opener.

Once removed I was able to fix mine easily (there was a break in a trace on the PC board).

Thanks to anyone who tried to help or wanted to help but didn't know how. (and didn't say anything misleading)

If anyone has a cruise control question I would be willing to help as I learned alot from this excercise

Thanks for the report. Regarding the airbag disabling however, I was instructed by a Ford tech to disconnect BOTH positive and negative cables and wait a few minutes. There is apparently a small battery that must discharge before it is safe to proceed.

I will not argue since it is an easy extra step..............but once the return path is disconnected (negative) the positive does not really matter.

Certainly what you say is intuitively correct as you have broken the path. After your reply, I looked it up and my Ford manual says to pull the positive and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Either way we must tread lightly. I'm afraid of those things so I guess I'll go for the overkill route and pull them both.

Thank you guys for your advise. I have a similar problem on my Grand Marquis. So it is as easily as inserting a small screwdriver on the side of the module, pull it, and it will come lose? Do you guys have any pictures?
