99 Passat Battery and Remote Key

Recently had to replace my 99 Passat battery. Suddenly quit. Would not start one Saturday morning after working fine the night before.

Interestingly, there may have been a warning. For a few weeks before this the remote key would sometimes not work – not at all. Open door manually, then the remote would work again. This happened 10 - 12 times. Has not happened in the 2 weeks since the battery was changed.

I have a 1998 Passat and a similar thing has occurred. Although not all my doors would lock once I engaged the alarm. Sometimes it was the passenger door, sometimes the rear driver's-side door. Just wouldn't lock. This morning, I have to huff it down to Kragen to grab a replacement Exide battery. Not bad for 6 years, I must say...
