Safrane Variable Power Steering Problem

Hi,

hopefully someone here can shed some light on my problem. I have a 1995 Safrane 2.2Vi Exec with VPS. Recently the steering fault indicator came on, so I took the car to my local dealer to diagnose. The fault was narrowed to wrong tyre profile. I bought the car with 60 profile tyres and it's supposed to have 65, and as the rears were a bit on the rough side I replaced all 4 with new 65 profiles. The problem is still there but its a lot less severe. What happens is, when you start the car the steering is ultra light, which is the way its meant to be. As you hit 60MPH the warning light comes on then stays on until you restart the car. Once the light comes on the steering is heavy, even at low speed. Its seems to me that whatever controls the steering resistance is sticking. Can anyone give any clues as to what may be happening and how the VPS works. I dont really want to shell out much more but if its a simple fix then i'll get it done.

Thanks in advance
Adam

Re: Safrane Variable Power Steering Problem

can't the dealer reset the ECU? I'd drain some of the PS fluid and put new fluid in because the oil pressure measurements are vital on those cars.
