concerning test only?

hey guys, my turbo in my mr2 does not work anymore, and i liked to install either a greddy or hks turbo into it. But i don't know if either one of those turbo can pass smog (that is, test only). i mean, the car comes with turbo, but can u pass the "test only" if u put in either one of those turbo. i understand some states do not have to smog, but i lived in California, and the smog here is tough, so i need some advice. thanks guys.

I would get the car running properly before you think about upgrading the turbo. I would also recommend upgrading your intercooler (or get water injection), before you upgrade the turbo.

As for smog, any turbo upgrade (except he CT20b) for the MR2 will get rid of your primary cat .... which is integral to passing smog (From what I understand).

As far as i'm concerned, I don't think there is nothing wrong with the engine. It's just the turbo that's not working. Like you were saying, if I changed the turbo in my car, I would have to change my cat also. If this is done, then I won't pass smog right? Are there any ways to pass smog (that is, test only) with the new turbo. I mean, I heard other people have gotten away with it. Oh, and one more question. Because I'm going to have to smog (not test only) my car this Friday, I was wondering if I would pass it if my turbo is not working. The engine is fine, but the turbo is dead. Any comments whether I would be able to pass it. Thanks.

The actual turbocharger should not affect your smog unless it is leaking oil and it is bruning into the exhaust stream.

From what I udnerstand, if you get an aftermarkte turbo, if you get equipment to properly tune your car... you can still pass a smog test.

I honestly am not not very versed on this subject. I have no smog tests

I have to agree with Hyde. Make sure your car is running fine before changing the turbo or even doing other upgrades. Have a strong foundation and go from there. I was able to pass smog with my stock turbo with no cats and going super lean with the AFC. After my turbo upgrade and built motor i have never tried to get my car inspected. they would probably towe the car away right there. Just to give you an idea about starting the car out right. My car makes good hp for even what mods we have done to the car. I am pushing 303whp with stock intercooler and maf. I dont plan on keeping it this way but its all in the tuning. Dont believe all the BS people tell you. Make sure your car is running perfectly while stock, and take your time doing everythign right. My car has ran at 303whp for over a year now on pump gas. People said we would blow the motor or whatever but it runs perfect.

One quick final question. Just as Rollhard was mentioning about gas, I remember someone saying that all turbo cars need to run on good gas (such as those 91 gas). Is it true that if I run on those regular 87, it would mess up my turbo. Ever since I had my car, I've been running on 91 even though my turbo doesn't work, but those gas price are getting pretty high now. Is pumping 87 ok to my car considering the turbo is still functioning.

its not the turbo that you should worry about. If you have an mr2 turbo, NEVER EVER EVER put 87 in your tank, esp if you have any kind of mods. Even stock mr2 turbos should always use premium gas. Your engine will be knocking and all kinds of crap would happen if you put 87 octane. I use only sunoco 94 octane in my car. I know that in cali, you can only get 91 so if thats the best you can get, then i would def stick with that. Yeah i feel you on the gas prices man, thats why i have a POS civic to drive as a beater. I get about 24mpg in the mr2 even though its modified but the civics 37mpg is so much better and i could put crappy ass gas and wouldnt care about dents, dings, etc.
