replacing supercharger coupler?

I was wondering how I am able to tell if I need a new coupler? And furthermore, is it a difficult process to take off of nose of the supercharger? Is there anything else I should replace while I'm at it?

Useful info on S/C coupler

From what I understand, a worn coupler will make clunking noises and if you remove the belt, you will feel excessive backlash when rotating the S/C pulley back and forth.

I bookmarked the following info a little while ago (got it off a local Grand Prix SIG site) .

This link shows you how to take the S/C snout off to access and replace the coupler. Great detailed pictures and how-to info.

These guys carry new & improved replacement couplers at a decent price.

You'll need to pull the whole Supercharger off to do this work. It looks like you can pull it off the main housing, but you'll spend much more time doing this.

Good luck!

Re: replacing supercharger coupler?

cool - finally someone with pics - I just recently purchased a 92 bonneville that has that notorious rattling at idle and knew that it was just a simple repair -all my techs at my job (goodyear) said it needed a whole new supercharger. but it does look easier to remove the whole supercharger. so what kind of boost should be factory on these cars? Can it be changed without changing the pulley? Is it computer controlled or vacume controlled.

its vacuum controled and about 9# and the only way to up psi is with a smaller pulley. and the dealers will only change the supercharger they wont repair them cause gm claimed that the eaton m90 supercharger is not rebuildable.
