Purchased 91 mr2

Hi, I am new to the forum and I just purchased a 91 mr2 N/A with 103051 miles on it for $4500, is that a reasonable price for this mr2 considereing i live in MN. anyways i just wrecked my mustang so I bought this little car. I am not good with all the import stuff or engine names. I was wondering what would be the easiest way to make it a turbo, bolt on a turbo or swap the thing out for the turbo motor. My dad and I always worked on the mustang so we have alot of car sense so any help would be greatly apreciated. Also what are some good websites to look for toyota jdm motors and what are some good sites on mr2 performance/getting to know some things about the car. any help would be greatly apreciated.

to turbo the mr2 it is best to swap the engine to the 3sgte... "t" stands for turbo... 1990 - 1993 they used the 5sfe (n/a) engine then in 1994 - 1997 they changed to the 3sge engine also (n/a) then they changed the engine again in 1998 - 1999 to the beams (red top) engine with vvt-i...

for the turbo in 1990 - 1993 they used the 3sgte engine with the ct26 turbo... then in 1994 they upgraded the turbo to a newer ct26 turbo, also refered to as the ct20b turbo... and they used this engine until 1999

all that information is in other countries other than the u.s. unfortunately, the u.s. stopped making the mr2 in 1995... also the usd mr2 never switched to the ct20b turbo and all of the years have 200bhp... in japan and other countries, the 1990 - 1993 models ran 225bhp and then 1994 - 1999 ran 245bhp....

engine types / location / bhp / year
5sfe(n/a), America, 130bhp, 1991 - 1993
5sfe(n/a), America, 135bhp, 1994 - 1995
3sgte(turbo), America, 200hp, 1991 - 1995
3sge(n/a), Other Countries, 170bhp, 1994 - 1997
Beams(n/a), Other Countries, 200bhp, 1998 - 1999
3sgte(turbo), Other Countries, 225bhp, 1990 - 1993
3sgte(turbo), Other Countries, 245bhp, 1994 - 1998

there are 3 gens of 3sgte... first gen was not found in the mr2, second jen had 225hp and 200hp in america... the third gen... which is in high demand, comes with the "ct20b" turbo and 245hp...

other notes to take is that the rear lights on the mr2 are different on the 1990 - 1993 and the 1994 +... this is current in all countries... also the spoiler is different between these two years... then in 1998 they again changed the spoiler on the gts model...

often people say that the turning is bad on the mr2 but the suspention was improved from 1992 - 1993... if u have any further questions or are confused about something then just post up

Welcome.
I would not recommend adding aturbo to your current engine ... you will be much better off getting the actual turbo motor.
