H22 misfire problem 2k Prelude SH. Please help!!!

My sister has a 2k Prelude SH. It has close to 60k miles on it, and the only mods she has done are AEM CAI, DCSPorts 4-2-1 header, Greddy EVO exhaust and AEM underdrive pulleys. She had most of the stuff installed about 6 months ago, and no problems. She then got the underdrive pulleys, and a few weeks later, she started having problems. First she got a Faulty EGR code, and she replaced it. Then she started getting Misfire Cylinder #2 codes. We've put new plugs, swapped them around, swapped injectors, replaced the distributor, plug wires, checked cylinder compression and had it to 3 different Honda dealers. None of them were able to find the fault. Any other ideas??? The car runs really strong most of the time, but pops the misfire code practically daily. Any ideas guys? Please reply to this post or email to [email protected]

It could be just a faulty sensor. Typically you'd feel a thumping or hesitation if the car is misfiring.

Engine misfire is caused by a variety of things. You may be running too lean. You've got a loose connection somewhere in the coil. Bad condenser. If your compression was still okay, then its not valve train failure or a cracked head gasket. Vacuum leaks can also cause misfires.

Faulty EGR valve and worn distributor caps were my first guesses, so I don't really know.

When the ECU reports the misfires, there is usually a subtly noticeable mis in the engine sounds. There's no condenser in the 2k models ignition system. It's a single external coil firing all 4 plugs. The snapper of all theories is the fact that it's always been Misfire Cyl#2. That, and we have occasionally got a code P1399, which isn't a Honda code...

Could it be that your ECU is malfunctioning? Otherwise I'm stumped.

You may want to check for factory recalls do a search on yahoo or something. Cuz, I've been in and out of the Honda dealership all year after i bought my 98 Lude used. I recently had a bad knock sensor replaced. There may be some sort of recall or bad sensor, if you're not physically noticing the misfire (you said it was subtle but...) it might just be a glitch giving you a phantom code.

Either way, Good Luck!

well i have a 2000 prelude type s and i also have the AEM CAI greddy evo exhaust and 4-2-1 headers.. i also have a high flow cat and i have a misfire or studder as well.. i have changed the plugs, wires, rotor button in the distributor.. i think since there are so many of us with the problem there might be a recall or a common problem with maybe a vacuum line. if anyhting comes up and you all find nehting out please let me know as well!!!

hey all.... just to let you know... i had a breather on my car on the place where there was a hose from the valve cover to the intake. it turns out that this is a vacuum line that also relieves pressure off the block. i put a hose back on, and my misfire and studder problem completly stoped... so if you have the same set up with the breather try getting a hose back on there and see if that works.

Thanks Mark . Glad you found your problem, and this would probably be helpful for future people with the same problem.

engine misfire problems !!!
I got one for you prelude owners. how to solve this problem? I got the check engine light on. I ended up taking my 2001 prelude to honda dealership 3 times in two weeks! (about $ 1500 in repairs) codes showed all cylinders misfiring. they were replacing plug wires, plugs, cap & rotor, fuel injectors, cleaning throttle body and doing something to the egr valve and the misfire codes kept comming back. then they did valve timing adjustment and still the same problem. I also noticed the car is using lot more gas and maybe it's my imagination, but I swear sometimes it is more sluggish. I have 84,000 miles on it and I bought it new so I know how it was driven. the honda mechanics can't seem to find the problem. what to do?
