Re: how to start?
Get a Front Engine, RWD car...
Get a car that you can maintain and work on if possible. If you get too old of a car, make sure to do maintenance. Research aftermarket support and availability for the vehicle before you buy it. Next step once you get the car, don't upgrade it right away. Go to AutoX or a local SCCA racing event for as cheap as $25 an event. Practice, practice practice... The reason why i say not to modify the car right away as far as suspension and engine is because you want to learn how to drive the car in its stock form. This will teach you a lot as far as learning the feel of the car. Once you slowly make changes and upgrades, it will cater to your skill as you improve. Go to as much events as you can afford, its all about seat time. |

Re: how to start?
Probably a 240sx or even a mid 80's BMW. First thing, go join your local SCCA branch or whatever local car club runs small car handling oriented events and club trackdays.
I'd do some small mods first up, mainly get the suspension fresh (ie bushes, bearings, ball joints) and go with some stiffer shocks and springs. Get some good front tyres, and get some spare rear rims with cheap tyres on. A note here, People do say learn to drift a standard car first, and largely you would be here, only fresh suspension makes a world of difference, and hey, why replace stock with stock when some budget springs and sports dampers would make a huge difference in the controllability of the car (for bugger all money) ? Make sure you've serviced it up as well (oil, filters, coolant, belts, radiator flush, hoses) to remove possible worries there then...... .... slap your crappy tyres on the back, and join in on one of the trackdays your club is running, and experiment with getting the tail out. Do this as often as possible, keep your car maintained well, and drive normally on the street...Try entering some other club level competitions too, you'd be amazed how much it will help you learn. Listen and watch others. Just one way of going about it.

Yes... your S13 and S14 versions are better than ours (US)... you have the SR20DET motor!

Re: how to start?
I don't know about that.
are sr better then the ones in the US? I am still to young to drive here (here it's 18), but I think my first car will be a 200sx. How's the gas mileage and reliability with a 200sx? |

Re: how to start?
our version has the ka24de motor which is
non-turbo... I'm not sure on the gas mileage on the SR20DET cars....
