Question

BMW has never produced a wankel or more commonly known as a rotary engine. The only production car made with a rotary is the Mazda rx-7 and the new Mazda rx-8. where did you here of such a thing?

Automotive Mechanics, by William H. Crouse, Sixth Edition. McGraw-Hill, Inc. 1970.
p. 96,
"Altough the Wankel engine has not been adopted for use in any American car, it is being used in a German BMW sedan and the NSU Spider, a two-seat sports car also manufactured in Germany. Several companies around the world have been licensed to manufacture the engine, including Curtis-Wright in the U.S., Daimler-Benz and others in Germany, Perkins in England, and Kogyo in Japan. Therefore, these engines are now in production. Mercedes-Benz is working on a 4-rotor Wankel engine said to develop 400 hp."

Re: wankel engine

BMW never made one, but there's a guy in NZ here who dropped a 13b into an E30.

Re: wankel engine

true the rotary has not been in a bmw but it definatly has been in more cars than just the rx7 and rx8....how about the rx2's through rx6?? not to mention mazda's first rotary the cosmo 110 as well as the eunos cosmo equipped with the 20b the rx7 and rx8 are newbies to the rotary scene. NSU was the first with the rotary engine also. There have been Corvettes as well as Citroens, Mercedes and numerous motorcycles with the rotary engines. The corvette and mercedes did not make production but the other definatly have.
