1996 Z

Hey guys I have a 1996 Z. When I bought it I didnt realize that they took away the variable valve timing for that year. I am having one hell of a time trying to get some more power.

I have put on inject intakes and Apex hybred exhaust.

Anyone know how I can get this car over 260hp without doing something that may shorten the life of the engine?

So far what I have heard is under drive pulleys and headers...... any of you Z fanatics out there have more suggestions? thanks.

well, i am assuming you are talking about the NA Z sence 260 is below the factory HP for the TT lol. anyway, there is some stuff you can do... http://www.stillen.com has a step by step of what you should buy... however, i would say dont do it. just save $$ and when you can afford it put a TT motor from the 91-95 in it (90 i understand to have a few bugs.) well that is just my .

Re: 1996 Z

I have asked questions about the NA to TT conversion and never get a straight answer about it! Some people say it's not worth it? Too hard? I dunno... I really want to install a TT motor myself instead of putting money into a NA motor....

You can do the swap if you really want to. Most times it is more cost and labor effective to just sell your na and get a tt. If you really want to do the swap, go ahead. Just know that it's not an easy road. It's by no means easy and I won't convince you otherwise. If you're not mechanically inclined I wouldn't suggest it to you. If you feel up to the challenge however, go for it.

Re: 1996 Z

Headers... TT MAF (mass air flow meter) TT injectors... Or NISMO 550cc injectors works too. Jun or Tomei cam gears, Z1 rebuilt heads. Underdrive pulley and belts. Honed ported polished and extruded plenum, upper and lower. You could get some enlarged throttle bodies. Also, get some good old Dinitrate Monoxide (N2o, or Nitrous Oxide) would give some nice nut to the HP level. You can get about 300hp out of that set-up, but its not going to be cheap. Ill link some usefull sites. Peace foo's
www.SGPRacing.com (for underdrive pulley, and cam gears)
www.z1performance.com (for the heads, and plenums)
www.stillen.com (for headers)\
www.nismo.co.us (for injectors)
www.Ebay.com (for TT MAF, and or injectors)

just hit up some places man, talk to people. Its possible.

Re: 1996 Z

i would first go with the headers and throttle body. the reason i would do those two things first (after the upgrades you did) is because i think that making the engine able breathe and exhale first is the most important thing.

The Mass Air Flow meter... Shit, find one at a junkyard. Its that thingunder neith your headlight centerpiece, has a clip on it. Thats the MAF. Find a Twin Turbo MAF, and swap her out. peace

Re: 1996 Z

Yeah... STILLEN has nice one... but it's like $200. I think you can find one at ULTIMATEZ.com. But they are NOT really Cold-Air cus of the Z's air-cleaning setup... they are called Hi-flow Intakes! Dont worry about cold-air... you don't need it!

Re: 1996 Z

considering the filter box is already located in the nose of the car, in front of the radiator, a cold air intake is already designed into the car.

Re: 1996 Z

the only reason i would get a "cold air intake" system for a 300zx is for looks. the stock tubing for the intake isnt as good looking as a shiny blue or red or silver tube. but since that is appearance, i would wait a while and get performance stuff.
