trans problems?

94 2wd suburban my first shift occurs at about 20mph then the next is at 35-40mph its eating alot of gas and the exhaust is real strong. its take off resembles trying to tow a car with the brakes on!i already put on a new tps because it would not idle but that was after this problem already had started. is it possible the cat converter is partially clogged and how can this be determined if it is . or could it possibly be the torque converter? i would be glad to have any insight you could give or if anyone has had this problem please let me know what it was, i dont want to spend more money on a trans like i did the engine and still have the same problem

The transmission takes the torque load from the engine,,and delivers it
to the wheels,,,,,,if the load is crappy,,, from the engine ,,,then ,,,the signal to the wheels is crappy!!! there is controls on the engine ///
electrical if trans is 4L60-E mechanical if 4L60 [ this can be adjusted]
BUT the engine has to be running good!!!

Re: trans problems?

GM started using the electronic 4L60E trans in '93. Your Suburban has this tranny or the 4L80E if you have a 454. It sounds like your probs are engine related and the delayed shifts are just a symptom. I'm cluing in on the exhaust odor. A plugged cat is definitely a possibility, which could have been caused by the faulty TPS. If the cat is plugged, make sure there are no other engine related problems before you replace it, or you will just melt it down again.

I would say exhaust also. If the one-way clutch was locked up or freewheeling (inside torque converter) it would change once lockup came on. Sometimes, the insides from CAT plug muffler also. Any decent repair shop should be able to diagnose very easy.

Stay cool.
