4 wheel drive problem; 1988 F-150

No one seems to be able to help with this- when I engage the 4 wheel drive on my '88 F-150 (manual hubs), in both 4 Hi and 4 Low it "HOPS". This gets far worse when turning the front wheels. Everything seems to engage correctly, but the hopping is severe. This is bad enoough so that when turning sharper turns the truck has a very hard time moving itself. As if it does not have enough power to move itself. It acts (and feels) as though it is running on bent shafts. One person recommended different tires, so the tires are new, but no change. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED GREATLY!!!

A little bit of "hopping" when turning the wheels is normal, however, "hopping" when going straight is not.

I've got a 89 and mine did the same thing. What happened to mine was one of the lockouts didn't lockin even though the indicator was showing that it was. I replaced both (my choice for both) lockouts and it took care of my problem. Hope this helps.

It can also be caused by very stiff U-joints in the knuckles.

Could also be caused by a different axle ratio between the front and rear axles, make sure they are the same.
