1992 Rodeo Turn Signal Probs

I purchased a 1992 Rodeo 4wd 3.1 V-6. The turn signals do not work. I have replaced the flash, but still no siganls. The flasher sounds like it is working properly. I do have 4 way Hazards, which operates on the same flasher. All of the bulbs are working. I have checked the fuses, and all are good. If anybody knows what I can try please let me know.

Sounds like a bad combo switch in the stalk. These can be a pita to changeout Hopefully someone will chime in with a procedure for you! Never done one on a Zu. www.stcharlesauto.com would have the part.

My 92 Rodeo has the same problem, left signal works after some persausion but the right just clicks. I read somewhere else in this forum that in the late models that you can take the switch out take it apart and clean the connections but I don't know where it was and I wouldn't know how to do it.

I'll be trying that very thing in the next week I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

The switch is not electronic on the 91 and I dont't know about the 92 but I heard they are the same. I do not know about the switch with integrated cruise control, my switch is bottom basic without cruise.

I just had the one from the Autowrecker do the same thing, go into a steady buzz. I pulled it apart to find out if it was something that could be fixed either by myself or an electronics shop considering the cost of a new part ($229.99 Canadian)... it was worth a shot.

There are two boards in the switch, the turn signal one is the lower one, gently remove the screws and flip it over. There is a rocker switch that creates the contact depending on which way you are turning. Carefull not to loose the pin that pushes on this rocker it is located on the main piece you just removed the board from. The rocker comes off easy enough by just slightly pushing the retaining clip that holds it in and pulling the rocker gently out. Violla ... now just use your buck'o five sandpaper to clean the electrical contact points on the board and the rocker. Place everything back the way it was removed, and it should work fine.

The switch is just made up of contact points on the inside. The contact points get dirty and you get the buzzing problem because of the open circuit, much the same way a burnt bulb opens the circuit. There are no Electronics, so if you have a little patience and some sandpaper, it can be good as new for less then a mechanics fee.

so ... I pulled the steering wheel and started on that switch, took me longer then I thought and I never got to try the sandpaper thing, althought that sounds like probably what it is. Although it may be a broken wire or short in the wiring.

I don't believe my problem is this because my left signal only works if you play around with it and the right never does, and when it failed it worked, worked once in a while, and then finally not at all.

Just a work of caution there is also a steel ball bearing which sits in a spring, as you remove the two plates holding the turn signal lever on be sure not to let this ball go or it'll really go. I lost the ball twice and the spring once last night . took me an hour each time to find it. (which is why I never got finished) This is in addition to the plastic check (and tiny spring) which activate the signals, (as above)

well worked like a charm.

you haven't replied yet but I hope you didn't spend $200 on a new switch.

when I took some sand paper to the points the signals the signals were brought back to life and work like brand new.

Thanks Des Markus I will try this procedure and see if it works. Sorry for not replying earlier, but have been busy. Sounds fairly simple.
