Angry emissions test problem

Our 92 AWD failed the last emissions test (Connecticut) and the failure indicated we should replace the EGR. There is no EGR on this motor (3.3). We don't want to spend the $600 required by taking it to a garage. Would it be the catalytic converter that needs replacing? It has 135K miles and doubt it's been replaced. We bought it a few months ago. Had the same problem on a 90 and replace the o2 sensor and the cat and we passed. Why would the code come up EGR when there is none?
PS> if we don't pass, or don't return for a test, they cancel our registration so it's not an option to just ignore it.

Re: emissions test problem

My 88' Caravan had failed the emissions test about two years ago. It had about 110k on it than and was smoking really bad. I had the catalytic converter replaced and it passed the test in NYC. This did not stop the smoking at all. The mechanic said that the smoke that it was producing had nothing to do with the emissions. After this I tried Castrol High mileage oil the one in the green bottle and it cut smoke that it was producing in half. Ride on, digimon

Re: emissions test problem

maybe you have a wrong computer in your car, did you have problems that required changing any sensor before?
i would change the cat caonverter and o2 sensor, then doa fuel injector service then try again.

usual stuff.

emissions

No - just the EGR code. This is the second caravan to have the same problem and same code readout - 2 different model years. Will make the two replacements and dump in a lot of dry gas. Right after we replace the rear main seal that just started leaking badly. So, do we satisfy the state requirements and get our emissions done on time with oil leaking all over the road to get there, or do we go late, pay the fine, but fix the leak so we don't harm the environment. Gotta love Connecticut. NOT!
