4L60 replacement

I'm going to probably have to replace my 4L60 in my 93 caprice. I wanted everyone's opinion on what transmission I should replace it with. Thanks.

Sorry, I should of clarified that I meant. What type of 4L60, meaning, who's a great builder for making them stronger and mild perfomance. Also just to add, should I just get a used one and put a shift kit and stall converter on it.

I could build you a 700 anyway you like. Unfortunatly we don't ship But this looks good.

I'm sure someone in your area could hook you up nicely too.

How much are you looking to spend. I know from speaking with all of the guys who put down some good power, that the 4L60e will not handle much power. I know of a few people who have gone through trannies at the rate of every 3000-5000 miles.

Your best bet. Convert it to a T-56 (6 speed manual). You should be able to find a used one for around $1300, plus another $1000 for install. That gets you a more or less indestructable transmission, as long as you aren't stupid with it. just my $0.02

There are quite a few 700s that do a 1/4 mile with 800 hp and more. They run and run. Takes $3000 but wth? There are so many aftermarket parts available. Most trannys are only as good as the guy building them(or the price someone wants to pay him) I had a '83 700 in my '78 TA chev powered. With an honest 275 horse I beat it and raced it for 4 years. Sold it, then my buddy beat for another 2 yrs, till he couldn't beat the guardrail. lol, He was ok luckily

If built proper (not by my brothers girl friends dads friend for almost free). Theres nothing wrong with this tranny.

Stay cool

I agree. I have a few friends with 700's behind some serious motors. One is behind a 900hp (with nitrous) motor in a 67 firebird. Another has one behind his 82 camaro which runs mid 12's. With the right money (at least $2000), it can be made strong. But, a stock T-56 can handle a shitload of power and has the benefit of being a stick. You CAN get them from yards with decent miles for about $1200-1500, and there is a conversion kit available for $1000... or you could piece it together for around $500. Takes about 7-8 hours to install. I have 2 friends who have done the conversion in their caprices and I plan on doing it once I have some extra cash floating around.

to get proper service from a 4L60 all you need to do is curethe 3 stoke evils: weak reaction shell, there is an upgraded model for about $70, and you need to put a few other holes in various places to make it oil at idle, and send more oil to the cooler, other than that, the vette servo and drilling out the 2-3 accumulator will give you the shifts you need. I have 3 properly built that I use to tow heavy stuff.

Well, I'd like to get my car in the 350-400 torque/horsepower range. I'd love to get a stick in it, but right now its my daily driver and I do'nt want to get burnt out on a stick too soon. So, price range is probably going to be around 3,000.

If your price range is $3000, do the T-56 conversion. Its well worth it and will handle any amount of power you will EVER put into it. I think you will get used to the stick REAL quick, and the gas milage savings will be worth it as well. granted, in your car, 6th gear may be close to useless unless you put deep gears in the back, which wouldn't be a bad idea. Anyway.... just my $0.02 from prior experience.

Re: 4L60 replacement

Well, I've driven sticks, and it's alot of fun. I'm still torn apart about it tho. I'd have to change my seats at the same time too won't I? I have bench seats in the front. About how much are the Bonniville seats and how hard would it be to change it over to them.

The bonneville seat conversion isn't too hard. Again, I have a few buddies who have done it (and I will change my seats at some point). I am not 100% sure if you HAVE to change your seats for the stick... I am pretty sure I have seen a fleetwood with a bench that had a stick in it.

Re: 4L60 replacement

You could swap them out for seats from a 9C1.I have one and there's plenty of room between them. I have an aftermarket console in it that's meant for a truck, and still have plenty of clearance for the belts.
A stick in a full size would be sweet

I'm still thinking about it. What all should i plan on doing to the transmission before i put it in. Like, clutch, or will that come with the kit for some reason. I'm going to start looking around for seats and trans.

Another question, should I expect my top speed to be higher then what it is now? I believe my top speed is suppose to be 154. I have GM8, "2.56?" and I'm wanting to change my rear end gears to 3.73 if it is higher, if not, 3.08 or 3.42 would be fine to I guess. Thanks.
