528 IA Intermittent Steering Shaking Issue

I am having Intermittent Shaking Steering issue with my car. Particularly when I reach 80 kms or 50 mph. The steering wheel shakes and putting my foot above the wheel arch feels like it possible is coming from the left wheel.

Sometimes the car is fine but other times it is really annoying. Please help if you know what it could be. Regularly serviced has been on going for some time. More frequent these days.

It doesn't get worse when brakes are applied, dropping below the said speed seems to ease the problem.

when was the last time you had the car in for a rotate and balance of the tires? sounds like you might have a wheel balance problem. one of the lead pieces could of been knocked off.

An improperly balanced or out-of-round tire will cause the shaking you have described.
Bad wheel bearings usually make lots of noise before they get bad enough to actually let the wheel move around enough for you to notice...I mean, it'll get hard to have a conversation with your passenger when a wheel bearing is bad (although I confess I'm basing this opinion on my Honda experience).
The fact that it doesn't get worse during braking makes me think it's NOT your brake rotor, which narrows it down a bit.
Also, worn tie-rod ends and other worn suspension components can have that effect.
Make sure the tires are properly balanced before you examine more expensive possibilities!

make sure that if u choose to get a wheel alignment they check the thread on your tires also at times mechanics will align and not checkto make sure your bolts are tight,(i had my suspension changed and one bolt was not completely tight so after a few days i had to get another alignment) u should basically get your entire front end checked out it will only take a few minutes once the car is on the lift

wheel shakes

mine happens exactly between 58-62 mph. the dealer here in Tampa claims it's the bushings...a $700 fix. I'm first going to get the wheels balanced (much cheaper) and see if that cures it, if not, then maybe I'll spring for the bushings.

ask you dealer to check out the bushings.

I just fixed that exact problem on my 1987 528e today! Took the front right tire off and was unable to spin the rotor because the caliper was grabbing the rotor. The problem is caused by faulty caliper. Replaced caliper, rotor spins freely and no more scary, shaking (like crazy) steering wheel at 45-50mph!
