is this a decent price for a chevelle?

i recently went and looked at a 70 chevelle malibu. it has been sitting up for a year or two. it supposedly runs and drives. the guy says it has a hopped up 327 in it and a new th350 trans. it is not a SS. the guy wants 3000 for it. it needs a trunk lock, carpet, seats recovered, grill, headlight bezels, quarter lights, and various odds and ends. it has a decent paint job on it with minimal rust. if i get it should i fix it up as is or make it a SS clone? i haven't heard it run (the guy wasn't there) i don't think it's worth 3000 but i was checking prices of others and it started seeming like a better deal. please let me know what you think about it. thanks.

Nick

Re: is this a decent price for a chevelle?

Did you check on prices for all of the stuff that needs to be replaced or worked on? 3000 is a little high for a non-SS that needs work. Did he say why the car was sitting for so long? If you've got that much money to spend, just keep his phone number and keep on looking around. Tell him you're going to keep on "shopping", and if you can't find anything after spending time looking for another one...see if he'll lower the price. Believe me, if it's been sitting that long...it's not going anywhere. He may try to tell you there's other people lined up for it, and he won't be able to hold it for you...which usually isn't true. Or you can do what I did once. Give him your name and number and a price YOU'RE willing to pay, on a piece of paper or a business card...and walk away. If he doesn't call you, it's his loss. From your description, I'd offer 1500...no more. Remember, if you have the money, you have the upper hand. The person with the money always has the upper hand. Good Luck.
