89GP stalls, idles rough, hard to start

I have an 89 Grand Prix and it has been running very crappy. It idles rough sometimes and:

1) When I go to a stop sign I have to put it in neutral and rev the engine so the car doesn't stall.

2) Sometimes the car loses power in the middle of driving

3) I have to give it gas for a while to start it and smoke comes out of the exhuast

4) The RPMs surge when idling

5) When I put it in drive after a complete stop there is a hesitation in power

6) The check engine light is always on and the oil indicator moves violently

What is wrong?

I was having the rough idle, stalling problem with my 89. machanic checked everything, including the computer. Turned out to be the Idle Air Control. Have your machanic check that.

Re: 89GP stalls, idles rough, hard to start

pull you diagnostic codes, or go to your local autozone and have them run a diagnostic. that will help lead you in the right direction. also have the coolant temp. sensor checked
