99' Grand Am intermittent gauges

I have a 99' Grand Am and when I start the car the gauges will come on like they are suppost to, but as soon as the car is running the gauges go off and then after driving awhile they will intermittently come on and off. The lights on the gauge panel and the headlights work, but when the gauges don't work neither does the cruise control or the heater. If you are using the heater and the cruise and the gauges happen to be working when the gauges stop so does the cruise and the heater. I thought maybe someone else might have had this problem or know how to fix it before I take it to a shop. Thanks.
