Had several De Vills, starting from 1978 Coupe...
One car did give me a trouble every time I have started it... Did smell the gas and after 12 - 15 sec of free starter work eventually was starting with a lot of burn gas smell and dark grey smoke... One day I have decided to check what the hek is going on inside the throttle body ? Gues what? It was completely floaded with fuel and that is why I could not start it. I decided to disconnect 1 pipe from the thottle body for the night to find where is the gas coming from and eventually got the right pipe! It was coming from the fuel pressure regulator which could not properly regulate the fuel and just let it overfload the throttle during the stop time. Went to JC whitney & ordered the correct part. Replaced myself in the carage. If you will do the same make sure you will order also the vacum fuel pipe (just in case if old one will be impossible to put back) Usually the rubber very dry and desytroyed by high temperatures. Really hope that this will help you since I have spent MONTHS trying to find the stupid problem. After replacement starts within half sec.
Sincerely, Greg.
