Found a shop manual...but?!?!

those of you who remember me, I know this guy who's supposedly got a CobraJet mustang in his garage. It's in bad shape, so I'm offering to do bone-head repairs for it and such.

First step: pick up a proper shop manual.

This is where it gets hairy.

The shop manual was printed Nov1967 for the 1968 models. It has fairlane, montego, mustang, cougar, and falcon in it. Everything seems to check out except that it keeps referring to the biggest engine as a "427 HP", lumping it in the same category as the 390 GT. It doesn't mention any 428's nor any Cobras.

My question is... when exactly did this engine come out and for what model year? Was it a 69 CJ released in 68? I read somewhere of people referring to it as a "68 1/2". What does that mean?

Is this shop manual valid? I don't want to start cracking down on this thing if I'm using the wrong stats. I haven't been able to find any 69 mustang manuals so I don't know if they refer to a 428.

Hopefully we have some OLD mustang know-ers here to help me out. I'm still a noob, although I've learned so dang much in the past 3 months.

PS - It is an OEM manual. Big (black) Oval inside.

PSS - Wait, I found a "428"... but sadly the words "police interceptor" come right after it... *sob*

PSSS - I'm looking at the major engine specs and this manual says the 427 had 390hp/460lb.ft I thought the cobrajet was 335hp/440lb.ft?
