amp power wire & alternator / overdrive pulley

i'm installing a audiobahn 1600 watt amp and 2 MTX 12" subs in my stock 99 grand prix gt 4-door. My first question is if anyone knows the best place to run the 4 gauge power wire through the firewall? and my 2nd question is if it would be best to install a bigger alternator ( http://www.clubgpstore.com/itemview.asp?itemid=65 ), or an alternator overdrive pulley ( http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/pro...ive_pulley.htm ) Thank you for any input you have

Re: amp power wire & alternator / overdrive pulley

I have a system in my car. Fosgate amp w/ 2 solo's. I run the overdrive pulley from ZZP and dont experience that headlight dimming when the bass hit.

On the passanger side under the carpet there is a large square gromet that you can run the power through.

What I always tell my students when they upgrade their car audio systems, is to upgrade the power wire coming from the alternator to the battery and the battery to chasis ground. I would up grade them to 4 gauge power and ground. Factory wiring is usually only 8 -6 ga. designed only to drive factory installed components. Now you're talking about a 1600 watt amp that's going to pull well over 115 amps!! Your system is only as good as it's weakest link. So if you have an 8 ga ground wire from your battery, but your amp uses a 4 guage. The amp will only see the 8 ga. Neg is as important as pos. Also your alternator only puts out , what,115 amps max at 2000 rpm.. Your battery will give it a good cushion, but I would probably add a second dry cell battery in the trunk. Just some food for thought.

Re: amp power wire & alternator / overdrive pulley

do you listen to rap/ hip hop or rock and roll? Do you like alot of boomy bass? If so a cap will do you no good. It's only good for quick transient response. It's usually good for rock and roll and such.. If that's what you listen to, then you're ok

actually i listen to just about everything but i didn't know it wouldn't help when listening to rap/hip hop. So would adding an overdrive pulley and another battery be a better option that would work with all kinda of music? Thanks for the input
