Need help picking a car

I am looking at getting a newer car for my girlfriend and it will be a car I will have to drive. I was looking at getting a 97 or newer GT four door, "she wants a 4 door" or getting a 98 or newer Intrepid ES. I have always been a GM guy but the Intrepid has only one real problem that I have heard of the water pump going out around 70K to 100K miles and other than that its a good running car. Any advise?

Re: Need help picking a car

The Grand Prix Gt and not even a contest.

The Intrepids also had tranny problems and the 3800 in the GT is a 250K engine with simple maintanence.

140K is the life of most Intrepids. They most likely will show the stress alot more than the Grand Prix.

Trade in on a used Intrepid is nothing compared to the Pontiac, which holds it's value much more.

Like I said, no contest, in my opinion.

have to completely agree with slacker on this one. the GM 3800 is a bit of a dinasour design but you know what? IT WORKS! the day gm decides to quit making this motor is the day they lose many customers.

So the other thing I was thinking about is if I do go with the Grand Prix 4 door but not a GT is there a motor or a trans I need to stay away from?

Re: Need help picking a car

yeah 3800 all the way. 94 buick with a 3.8 with 272,xxx miles went across death valley into california from pheonix AZ, and then back every other weekend for 4 months still runs... just needed a fuel pump he soon sold it but the engine had all those miles on it and still ran through 100+degree weather for hours at a time. good engine just treat it right(oil changes)

But for your question I would like to see you go with the 3.8 instead of the 3.1 The 3.1s are nice but the 3.8 shows its derability

well, I would have to say that sounds good, you had no other problems like the trans., water pump or other items go wrong? I would also like to know with those many miles on a car how its held up, such as the interior cranking or braking, certain lights that burn out and or any other little problem that come up.
P.S. thanks for the input.
