'99-intermittent start/immediate stall

My 1999 suburban will start but stalls out immediately. This is an intermittent problem, that will resolve on it's own. I have had the fuel pump and filter replaced (twice). Also there was a short in the coil wire and that was replaced . Computer diag. shows nothing. The problem is that by the time it gets to the mechanic it is running again. The security light is also on intermittently (has been for 1+ yrs.) but no codes come up. I had a remote start put on last year. Any ideas???? .

You might want to try to isolate the remote start and the security system to make sure its not cutting the fuel supply to the motor

I am having the same problem and have been told it is the Passlock Sensor for $820 it can be replaced. Not sure I want to spend the money on this yet. Not sure in my mind this is what it is. Did you get yours resolved?

I have the same problem, starts and stalls, will start after about 30 min. usually. I do not have a remote start on mine, (unless the previous owner had one and I don't know about it.)

Re: '99-intermittent start/immediate stall

Guys, this is a very common problem with GM vehicles. I STRONGLY suggest calling their customer service number even if you are over warranty. What's going on is the Passlock cly. key is failing. Yes, the only thing to do is replace the whole assembly and this can't be done at home or private garage. Well, the physical install can be but not the programming part. There's only about $150 worth of parts and about 2 hours worth of work. Yes, it is gouging your pockets. I just want you to contact GM so they will do a recall on these crappy systems.

Mike, as for you, I would suggest getting your RS looked at or temporally disconnected at the Passlock wires for a while.

I had a friend with that bought a G-am right off the showroom floor. After about a year later (about 9k miles later) she called and said the car was hard to start. I said I'd look at the remote start before she had it towed to this dealer that HATES remote starts. Well, before I got there the car was gone. The dealer called and said they found the prob and it was my remote start. I called the dealer back and asked if they took care of the recall on the ignition switch (separate issue but they had to replace the whole assembly which included the passlock system). They said no so I said before they charged this lady $500 for the repair and tow, they should take care of the recall. Funny how EVERYTHING was taken care of under warranty. I didn't even touch a thing. That's been about a year ago now!

I have been having this problem with my '99 1500 4WD suburban for over a year. I have learned to wait a few hours and come back where it starts fines and I am on my way. It is very intermittent and the vehicle has left me stranded on many occations.

The problem finally got bad enough that the next morning after being stranded it was still not starting. I had it towed to the dealer and sure enough when it got there it started just fine. The dealer checked the passlock sensor voltage and said it was not to spec. So even though the vehicle started I agreed to have them replace the Passlock sensor assemble to a tune of over $600.

Two days later the vehicle left me stranded again. It has done this three times now since I had the Passlock replaced.

I am at a loss as to what to do next!!!

Any ideas??

Jeff

Jmarrah,

Mine is doing the same thing. I have replaced the passlock and two days later it is still not starting. Did you find out what was causing yours.

1999 Suburban Passlock

Had similar problem, start and immedietly stall. Passlock sensor in the column was bad according to the dealer. $500, it started. 3 days later, it would randomonly not start but eventually would ... if left to think about it. Finally threw a code under wide open throttle pulling up a big hill.... Mass Air Flow sensor, althought this time I read the codes and did it myself for an annoying $250. This also resolved an intermittent hesitation problem I'd had where the engine could rev up under no load but not when the transmission was engaged.
