V4 Vs V6

What do you consider Faster

Grand AM = V4, 16 Vales, HODC, 2.5L
vs.
Grand AM = V6, 3.1L, Ram Air

I know their are differences between horsepower, which the V6 has more.

I think the V4 will beat the V6 in the beginning because it has a lighter engine and has the HODC and 16 Vales.

but in near the finish line I think the V6 will win

Well.... First is is a DOHC (Dual over head Cam) Second. There is no V4 Pontiac engine. Third it is a 2.3 or a 2.4 not a 2.5, unless Someone made it a Stroker engine. It depends on if the 4 cyl is the High output engine or not, the HO had more HP, but less Torque. Depends on wether they were Auto or manual. If the Quad 4 was a man and the V6 and Auto, which it more than likely is, Ram air is a newer option, and they are all autos now.

I purchased a 1999 Grand Am that has a 4 cylinder, dual overhead cam , it is rated at 150 horsepower. I have driven both 4 and 6 cylinder cars. The 6 cylinder engine has more all around available torque, that is when you want to go you ease the gas pedal down slowly. The 4 cylinder develops it's horsepower when the engine is wound up, going down the road.. I chose the 4 cylinder because I commute in the Los Angelos area and travel over 100 miles a day. I did my own fuel economy testing and have estimated my 4 cylinder averages between 25-28 miles per gallon highway, which I am pleased with considering the car is a mid size model and weighs in over 3,100 lbs. It does well carving up the hills and canyons in the Ca. area. I would like to have the power of the V6 however I am sure the gas mileage is less. Has any one out there ever measured the fuel economy of a 1999 V6 Grand Am?

so i cant answer your question as it stands since it has alot of hole in it.

I just bought an '04 Grand Am, 5 speed, 4 CYL. They do exist, although from what I'm told, they're not as common as the V6.

140 hp @ 5600 rpm

170 hp @ 4800 rpm
195 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpm

20 City mpg/ 29 Highway mpg

I just got an 02 /w 3400 V6 and in town I only got about 18.5 mpg. The problem is, I know I can do better if I'm light on the gas, but when you have that power, it hard to resist. I haven't got a calculation for highway yet. When I had my Saturn, I got about 24 mpg in town and 37 mpg on the highway. That was the twin cam endine, 1.9L. I'm sure I should do at least 25 mpg /w my GA GT. As fare as I'm concerned, I don't think the manufacturer rating as obtainable unless you drive like granny and flat land all the way. I know my GA cruises up the hills much easier at 70 mph than the Saturn did. (124hp)
Can't wait for my upgrade for my GA. It's in the mail now.

Of course they have 4cylinders, grand ams have had 4 cylinders for over 15years or more.

Thanks for the Data, I would want a V6 any day of the week for the performance, however I log on an excessive amount of miles commuting and am willing to trade off some of that "smoke" for a little better fuel economy. I don't have that torque, but I breathe a sigh of relief when I visit the Mobil gas station less frequently..

Thanks for the stats, I don't think the published stats are accurate, they may be under ideal conditions on a flat track with a skilled stats driver. I measure how much fuel that goes in my gas tank and then clock how many miles I drive in relation to the fuel gage, and repeat the process for a few weeks and then average the numbers of miles pergallon. I know this is not scientifically accurate but I get close to how many gallons it takes to go a known distance. thanks again.

Yep, I know this, I was responding to C_Sephiroth who said that Pontiac doesn't make a 4 cylinder.

Mileage quotes from the dealer are rarely 100% accurate, you have to measure in great things such as terrain, red lights, stop-and-go, and what kind of gas you use. My aunt used to keep a notebook in her glove compartment and used to make notes every time she got gas so she would know what kind of gas made her car run better and which station had better gas. I have never felt motivated to do that, but maybe it was b/c I always drove older cars and really didn't care

I think he meant that their is no v4 engine. V4 does not mean the same thing as 4cylly.

Thanks for the info, I was curious on the exact mileage because I wanted the power of the V6, and I wanted to see if there was a substantial difference in the gas mileage of a 4 cylinder. I get good fuel economy with the 4, I am content with it for now.
