wow wait.... 3sgte has a IRON block... is that correct? if thats the case then why dont people switch to the 5sfe because it would probably handle nos alot better

Re: 5sfe and 3sgte

3sgte has an iron block because it a lower comprission motor while the 5sfe has a alum. bloch cause its only mid comprission motor...so yeah you can go with nos for a 3sgte in a stock motor...which supports 100 shot nos...and the 5sfe will only handle 60 shot but 80 and thats pushing it already

Re: 5sfe and 3sgte

and also with the turbo and the air flow system the alltrac is better off with nos...for those of you who want more ponies the easy way...right now im doing 160 shot nos...but with a fully built motor!!!...the only thing im missing are the sleeves for the block...and i also might shave the block too...not sure yrt though

lol which engine do you have anyway? i have the 5sfe and im thinking about actualy staying with that engine and just moding it.. but i wont put nos in it just yet. and i would kinda have to agree nos is for people who want to gain more hp quickly. and cheaply also.

if your going to mod the engine you will probably be better off just getting a 3sgte because most likely the option of a turbo is sure to pass your mind and to put a turbo on the 5sfe is not recommended... the head of the 3sgte is usually swapped onto the 5sfe to strengthen the engine.... as he said b4 the 3sgte is iron which is better under preasure of turbos... it is also a smaller engine at 2.0L making thicker walls also strengthening the engine... there arent many mods you can do to the 5sfe engine to upgrade its power and you end up spending thousands of dollars for little increase... if you stay w/ the 5sfe you may want to bore it out get a stroker kit, exhaust, ecu, blah blah blah u kno but i just recommened getting a front clip of a celica w/ a 3sgte engine in it

Re: 5sfe and 3sgte

i have the 5s-fe in my car how much would it cost to swap it for the 3s-gte and would it be better to just put the 3s-gte heads in my 5s-fe?

well it depends on where you get it from... i know some website have half cutts for about 1100 and you can find them on ebay for about 1000

i myself am going to go to a junkyard somewhere and see if they have the 3sgte....... get it ported polished and what not.... probably be alot cheaper also

If you are going to convert to a turbo from a non-turbo you need a new ECU too.. if your car does not come with a stock turbo then you need something to control it..

Also NOS isn't just for those who want cheap HP.. I have the 3SGE engine in my car (higher compression than the 3SGTE) and I am fully upgrading it right down to even exchanging the crank an pistons for something custom made to increase my compression even more (I want to hit at least 10.0:1 like the 93-98 Supras and 00-02 Celica GT).. I want the NOS to increase my acceleration when needed, as a back up measure incase I need to run from something if you know what I mean..

As far as the engine stats the 3SGTE has more stock HP than the 5SFE..
Horsepower is as follows:
  1. 3SGTE -- 190/200 @ 6000 RPM (190 was in the 88-89 All-Trac/200 was in the 90-93 All-Trac)
  2. 5SFE-- 130/135 @ 5400 RPM (130 was in the 90-91 Celica GT and GTS/135 was in all other models)
  3. 3SGE (Mine) -- 135 @ 6000 RPM
Compression is as follows:
  1. 3SGTE -- 8.5:1 (88-89 All-Trac) and 8.8:1 (90-93 All-Trac)
  2. 5SFE -- 9.5:1 (All Models)
  3. 3SGE -- 9.2:1 (only one model)
Torque is as follows:
  1. 3SGTE -- 190/200 @ 3200 (190 was in the 88-89 All-Trac/200 was in the 90-93 All-Trac)
  2. 5SFE -- 140/145 @ 4400 (140 was in the 90-91 Celica GT and GTS/145 was in all other models)
  3. 3SGE -- 125 @ 4800 (only one model)
I have the advantage with the iron block to force more compression, though the 5SGE has more stock and 15-20 more lbs of torque than mine. But the 3SGTE has 45-55 more lbs of torque than the 5SFE with the advantage of the Turbo (though turbos are hell to work with)..

This is how I would rate the engines (in relation to what I want to do with the engine):
  1. 3SGTE
  2. 3SGE
  3. 5SFE

i would have to agree 3sge and 3sgte are better then the 5sfe. for that reason but really if you want a badass car then just do whatever you can and get custom work done... probably cost more but in the long run it may be worth it.

Re: 5sfe and 3sgte

With an engine that has so much alum. in the engine, especially the block, when you heavily modify it to it's limits it is like driving a time bomb.. Granted the alum. engines are lighter than iron but not nearly as durable..
