Brake Shift Interlock

I just had $3000 in transmission work done on my 99 Durango. Today I notice it doesn't need the brake depressed to shift from park to drive or reverse. I have had this car for nearly 4 years and never noticed this so I'm thinking something was disconnected during the repair work. I called the repair shop and they said 99 Durangos did not have this feature. It seems odd to me that if my car didn't have this feature that it took me 4 years to find this out, and what a coincidence - just after I had someone do extensive work on the car. I have called several Dodge service centers and have gotten mixed response, some say 99's did have it, some say no Durango's have this, some say 99 was a transition year and some do, some don't. I don't know who to believe. Bottom line - this is a safety issue. If it was a feature in my car I want it fixed, but I need to know if this was a feature in the 99's.

I totally agree with you being concerned that this is a safety issue, but as far as i know Chrysler didnt seem to have this shift interlock. I know this because I was moving a 99 or 00 Dodge 3500 dually and though wow i dont need to push the brake . Sad thing is that I had driven this vehicle many times in the past and never thought twice of it.

I dont think shift interlocks were mandated until late 2000 or 2001 ( I may be wrong, this is from what I have seen)

You would think that with the Jeep Cherokee and Dodge Dakota stunt these guys would be happy to make a "bulletproof" safe transmission.
