2000+ Jettas

I am thinking of buying a 2000+ V6 Jetta GLS or GLX and I was wondering if they have good maintainence records? Are there any major problems with the car like electrical or mechanical that will cost enormous amounts to fix? Any information would be appriciated.

that depends on who you ask. some people have NO problems, some people have pieces of horrible workmanship. it's got it's own complaint site: www.myvwlemon.com. I have a 2001, and I haven't had any problems with it, other than a paranoid check engine light.from what I read here, the most reliable jettas are the MKIII's put out in '95-'96.

The most reliable Jettas were the A1 & A2's (pre '93), but they're getting pretty old & unreliable now. 1999.5 and up Jettas seem plauged with electrical problems, especially the higher end versions with the fancier electronics & VR6. The very common ignition coils, O2 sensor & mass air flow sensor problems have some VW extended warranty help (70K). But the rest of the common problems are your problem: throttle actuator valve & controler, stereo, body control computer (door locks & alarm), electronic dash & info center & very psychotic checkk engine lights. Watch out if you're in a strict emmission testing area. To add to this VW uses a very proprietary electronics system (OBD-II will only help you on some of the basics). They try to keep the repairs in the dealerships (which don't seem to want to help much & are expensive). I like VW's for the most part, but I'm sooooooo glad I didn't buy a new one in 2000. If you want to stay European in those years, try BMW & Mercedes, they aren't too expensive in the long run.

I have a Jetta 2000 and yes, I had a few of the above problems. They seem insignificnt to how great the car drives. Frankly, I think it's an awesome car. The repairs were nothing more than a day, mostly paid for and mostly I get a loaner.

...and we're comparing to a BMW? Boy, unlesss they improved quite a lot, I wouldnt say they never spend time in the shop.... I'd take a well trimmed and equipped Jetta over a beemer any day.

i have an 03 jetta 1.8t wolfsburg edition. its hella nice, and fast. i've only had one problem, and that was with the oil dripping(gasket was leaking) just a couple of days that only took a few hours in the shop, but other than that, i have the issue of going to fast. i've brutalized my car and it still drives like a corvette.i've driven with the parking brake on, i've hit curbs numerous times, once doing 45 down a hill. but the car is great. nice daily driver, and awesome racer for at nights, and its all stock, except for a few hidden parts that appear and sound stock.im not to big on being noticed, but my cars so nice i still have tha problem.

for you guys that complain bout the check engine light coming on, all i got to say is watch it when your pumping gas into your car, the newer vw's have a sensor around the mouth of your gas tank neck, and if you get gas in there the check engine light will come on for a while!

VW transmissions and clutches SUCK! If you beat on them they WILL break as reference to my shop I work at. We do at LEAST one trans or clutch job per week and we live in an area where most people drive autos. Every GTI that has come into my shop, has had the clutch replaced under warrranty.

Veedubmechanic, i just recently had to replace my clutch, after only 25,000 miles, and i am certain I took quite good care of it, but anywways I take it to the dealer, and its not under guarranty, they wanted to charge me $1400. Think this is a scam? I dont trust them anymore, I had to take the car to another mechanic where it costed me $900, but if its covered under guarranty i might go protest.

I even went to install my spoiler, and the dealership took 2 weeks in doing it, and not 2 hours after recieving it, the spoiler comes off.

I love my jetta, its so fun to drive, but its giving me one bad headache and an empty pocket.

i dont know whats up with ya'llz cars, but i've had my jetta for a year now, its a manual, and my first stick shift and i beat the shit outa it

but i know tha clutch is alittle worn on it, if i end up keeping the car within the next year ima get a new high perf. one, the dealers over charge shit, and mechanics, i only trust me and my father, or his dad. i've built enough cars to know how to do the shit so fuck the shops, plus im restoring a 48 chevy fleetmaster, im turnin it into a dragster.

ive never heard much about blown trannies... the MQ350 = the 6speed right? i heard those were near bulletproof. ive never heard stuff bout the tippies and 5-speeds tho... o well

the beginning years in a new generation of cars are always plagued with problems. vw's fixed most of these by now (02.5 or later) so dont be too scared if its a low mileage M.Y. 02.5 or later car that your looking at.
