88 Civic EFI Idle flare

Hi Guys! Can someone shed some light on this problem? When cold starting my Civic the idle constantly flares up and down by a few hundred rpm. It goes away once the engine is at normal operating temperatures?? Drives me nuts when it happens though. UPDOWNUPDOWNUPDOWNUPDOWN...............

THANKS

Re: 88 Civic EFI Idle flare

Hmm, if its a 1.5 that sounds like the TPS sensor or there is another sensor that goes bad on the 1.5 i just forget what it is. But yea my old DX did that alot, check your ECU it might be throwing a code without turning on your engine light mine would do that also. And if all else fails maybe this can help?

Re: 88 Civic EFI Idle flare

mine does it when its hot, just a high idle when its cold, no idea what it is. i'm gonna go ahead and replace all the sensors around the throttle body and also the map, we'll see if that helps

Re: 88 Civic EFI Idle flare

I used to have that problem.
First check to see if all your hoses on your intake manifold are connected. If one of these comes loose, it'll cause ur idle to lope.
If its a code 3 and/or 5, its your MAP sensor (the one mounted on the firewall). If it's a code 14, that's your EACV (cylinder on the back of the intake manifold). Last but not least, it could be your TPS (not likely) which is located on the throttle body.
