Rear Ends and Tranny's???

Ok, ever since I been on this site, I have heard stuff about blowing up your rear end in your f-body, but how? what happens when you increase your power that would cause you to blow your rear end, and what exactly goes into a rear end? I was reading another thread and he said something about sticky ties with a stock MT z28 would cause your rearend to go kaboom! why? and why would a transmission not be able to handle a certain engine? like the 700r4 not being able to handle a 502. why? I dont mean to be a bother, but i know parts, but not how they work in relation to other parts.....thanx 4 any help

the problem with the stock rear end and transmissions is that they were designd for 170-250hp, so they built the units to handle that power for as cheap as possible. that means they skimped on material in weak areas that they could get away with, such as clutches in the trans, and the strength of the metal and bearing caps in the rear end. so when you start upping the power, the actual metal peices of the rear end will break, as in cracking the ring gear, or stripping teeth off of it. you can actually fracture the housing of the carrier, stuff like that. for the trans what happens is the clutch packs will wear quickly, and fail early. with a manual, its much the same stuff as the rear. the metal is too weak, and will break gears, shafts, or strip teeth off. think of it as a small electrick motor, all you need are cheap plastic gears. throw those same gears on a gas powered lawn mower, and youll understand very quickly why the stock units fail under load.

alright, i get it now, thanks 4 all of you help man, because i was looking for some mods and had no idea about the rear thing, i guess i would've found out the hard way.....

no prob man. the stock gear will safley handle around 300hp. later fourth gen rears can handle 400-450 im pretty sure. as far as the trans, i would just either un it till it died, or go ahead and get an aftermarket rebuild from say, B&M or someone.
