Noise by exhaust manifold

I'm a proud owner of a 1997 Integra GSR. At 3,500 rpms, there is a slight rattle towards the bottom of the header. Has anyone even seen anything or heard of anything like this?

Re: Noise by exhaust manifold

It is most like ly the heat sheild on the cat. Or the heat sheild on the manifold.

Re: Re: Noise by exhaust manifold

I have access to a lift and I'm going to try to tap on the shield and anything else I think might cause it. I'm wondering if anyone has had a rattle internally, like maybe a loose bearing.

No it would not bea bearing, a loose bearing would spin and grind itself up and then you would have a loud slappin noise. I would start the car and have someone hold it at 3,500 rpm or where ever it rattles and then put pressure on the cat heat sheild with something and see if the nosie stops. This is very common on the DC chasis tegs.

mine happened to be the double piping on my header. it came loose. i tried having a guy weld it, but had to get a new header anyways

Re: Noise by exhaust manifold

I'm gonna get it on that lift as soon as I can. I hope it is the double piping because that's the perfect excuse to research a great header for some more performance.

it took quite awhile before i figured out it was the double layer piping. it would rattle at about 3,500-4,000 RPM. got damn anoying in closed areas. should here the rattle coming from around where the header comes into one peice from two. that's where mine made the most sound.

Re: Noise by exhaust manifold

Well.....I had a chance to put the car on the lift and check the header. No noise came from anything by tapping with a synthetic hammer. I'm definately not gonna beat the crap out of the stock exhaust just to see if it rattles. I'm going to get a new header to replace the stock one and then post results later. =( I figure this damn noise out. <grin>

mine did not rattle when it was banged on. that is what took me sooooo long to figure out what exactly it was. the only time it did it was in that certain rpm range. the way that we figured it out was to putit on a lift with someone in the car and have him rev it up to where it started rattling. we then took a pry bar and pulled the piping one way and then another and it stopped. but the guy ended up doing some spot welds to fix it. and then it broke the welds. and he did it again and it broke the welds again. so i got a new header

Re: Noise by exhaust manifold

Lol.....Great. My thoery of getting a new header should work then. I get so paranoid sometimes when something isn't normal.
