Smile Stupid Question from a beginner

Alright I bought our 2000 Sunfire SE in November after my wife wrecked our "Firebird" and I'm slowly trying to get the "Sunfire" fixed up by adding some inexspensive modifications (I'm a hard working guy and money is tight). I was in the Automotive store today looking around and ran up on these little "Air filters". They look like a miniture "Cold air intake filter" and are about 3 inches big with a clamp. Can these things go on a "Sunfire" anywhere!? If so where? I thought they looked cool and they weren't exspensive. Thanks for helping a beginner car fixer upper.

Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

i wouldn't waiste my time a sunfire is a cheap grocery getter just leave it at that and save up for another f-body if you want performance and make your wife drive the sunfire. you can't make a sunfire fast but 50 lbs of stickers on it and it'll look fast thats what the ricers do. if your looking for serious horsepower gains buy a tornado, the fuel line magnets and a aquatune.. seriously what are you thinking?? just drive it till it dies sunfires are disposible cars just like kia's save up for a real car

Re: Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

Did I say anything about decals and stuff. I was just asking a mechanic that may enjoy this forum what the little breathers are and if they will apply to a "Sunfire SE". I'm not out for a fast car, I just want to get to my job everyday and get my grocerys home. Any little thing to help a car along in this tough world sounds good to me.

Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

sorry i was just checking to see if you were going to rice out your grocery getter. sunfires are decent reliable efficient cars. but i hate it when some idiot throws on 18" rims, a 85lb spoiler, coffee can muffler, k&n filter, purple neon lights under the car, ground effects & 50lbs of stickers on a 4-door economy car then tries to race my z-28 which has about 400 hp. and for your intake question if it fits one cavalier/sunfire it should fit them all they all use the same airbox&filter just make sure it has a spot for the maf(mass air flow) and iat(intake air temp) sensors. the iat is in the factory inlet hose and the maf is in the airbox lid.

Re: Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

I just was laughing a little bit when I heard you talk of "some idiots" who decide to customize their cars some. I have a '01 Sunfire that IS customized. I have the "coffee can" muffler, the k&n filter on my intake, neons (black lights) in my car... I also have many more upgrades. I don't think that my turbocharged Sunfire is some "riced out grocery getter". I take pride in what I do with my car. I've gotten decent 1/4 mile times that would compete, if not beat, your much heavier Z-28. Guaranteed I'd kill you off the line.

Give some props, not disrespect, to those who choose to "rice out" their cars.

Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

how much faster do the neon lights make it??? at least you have a real power adder (turbo). i'm not saying you can't beat me but my heavy old school car is a torque monster(383 vortec heads) with a posi and pretty stiff suspension. will damn near snap your head off in a 2 1 downshift if the tires don't break loose. i guess i'm just old fasion when it comes to making power i don't really care about power it's torque that i'm after it's torque that makes a car jump off the line and do a wheel stand or burn the tires off. I don't care for those tiny ricer engines they sound like a chainsaw on steroids i prefer the deep rumble a V-8 makes instead of that anoying buzzing sound.

K&N filters are not just for speed eh...they advertise a max HP gain of 11 but most cars it'll only give like 1...unless you add the entire intake.

What they are amazing for is the fuel economy...often 5 MPG and sometimes more...go to the testimonial site on K&N's website for all the numbers people get

and on a "little economy car" like this an extra 5 mpg is heaven

Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

pronto that amac209, but i have respect for those of us who can't afford a big powerful car, due to insurance reasons or what not, and make their cars look good, its about taking pride in something you love and just because some people WANT a z28 but can't afford them doesn't mean they can't make their own vehicles look good, it doesn't make them a ricer. besides those ricers pay my salary, lol. But i am in full agreement with you about those fart cans people call tuned exhaust, we could all live without those.

Re: Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

well, my neons add about 25 hp each last time i checked... multiply that by the total # i have.... which is 35... wow! 875 extra hp! awesome! plus, each sticker i put on my car will give me...

come on. seriously. give some props to guys who'll put up a fight against your z... admitting that some may beat you... we'll work on that one.

I don't think there's anything wrong with fixinf up a sunfire. You just have to know how to do it right. Those of us who start with preformance first and worry about cosmetics last will always end up first at the finish line.

Re: Stupid Question from a beginner

look theres nothing wrong with grocery getters they're cheap reliable transportation. i work for a chevy dealership so i tend to look at cars for what they are. not some vision that all these kids seem to have of their low priced fwd compact car. If you think "MODDING" out your 2.2L sunfire with a big ass wing, neon lights, clear tail lights, fart can muffler, and K&N filter makes it all bad ass and the sweetest ride around thats great. but my perception of that car is rather different. I see a bottom of the line car with a bunch of stupid bolt-on crap from pep-boys. don't get me wrong i like performance. but i hate posers with their asshole additudes. I was hoping this thread was lost or something cause i'd rather help people that need advice than fight all the ricers....
do you have a tornado in your sunfire??? man those are the sickest mod!!!!! you'll be able to blow away a Z06
