I have a problem with my truck, it wont crank if it is hot outside or if you run it for about 30 min. When it is cool outside or you let it sit awhile after you run it, it will crank right up and run fine. Why is it doing this? i've got alot of opinions, but does anyone have experience with this? I think it is the ignition module, but im not sure. If you know please help.

Well, what's it got for a motor? Does it have headers? If yeah, than it sounds like heat soak in your starter.

I've got an 89 with the 351w the ignition module went bad in it and when it got hot it would actually shut the truck down while I was running on the highway, but never had no problems starting i don't know if that helps or not.

My wifes Explorer (4.0v6) and boys F150 (straight 6, 300?) did same thing. Both have the small motor type, gear reduction starter motors. Identical starter motors, just that one mounts on RH and other bolts on LH side of engine and has different nose housing. Anyway, the brushes in both of the motors were wore down to the point of barely touching the comm. Place in town sold me a set of brushes for 5 bux.

Starting Problem
I had the exact same problem w/ my 1991 f-150. I came to the conclusion that it was my shorty headers right there by the starter w/ no heat shield or header wrap. I then got a "beefy" starter (bigger, thicker, and heavier than the original) from C.C. Starter Shop in Corpus Christi, TX. I never had that problem again. Now I have a whole new problem which I'm about to address. Good Luck. P.S. That starter shop told me that the headers wouldn't make a big difference in starting but I think it did. Javi.
