Pics of my beloved 89 hatch and other non-honda projects

Here is my 1989 Civic HB

It is under construction, as is everything... it would seem....

It started life as a boring little STD.

It is my daily driver and sees 70 miles per day @ very high speeds all week long for my commute to work (35mi each way).

It has about 200,000 miles on it and serves its purpose beautifully.

I have not owned it terribly long, but I fell in love with it quite quickly.

So far, I have been focused on handling upgrades.

I am patiently awaiting some warmer weather and the completion of my garage so that I can return one of my other cars to service and get the Civic painted / install the kit / etc. Right now all work is done in my driveway (sigh..).

No shops have touched this car -- other than the initial state inspection, when it was purchased from the previous owner in 100% stock condition.

Current mods:
- Suspension Techniques rear sway bar w/ ST urethane bushings
- Suspension Techniques front sway bar w/ custom fabbed mounts
- Energy Suspension front sway bar bushings

- Neuspeed tubular steel front strut tower brace
- polished aluminum rear strut tower brace (ebay)
- Cusco front control arm subframe brace (JDM)
- Neuspeed rear control arm subframe brace

- Tein SS coil-overs (adjustable height & damping)
- 2000 Civic Si 15x6" OEM wheels
- Yokohama AVS ES100 195/50 tires

- Performance Friction Z series brake pads

- Energy Suspension front motor mount

- 330mm (13") Sparco "Ring" steering wheel in black leather
- Honda emblem horn button and powdercoated trim ring
- custom made short shifter (a very hacked Pacesetter)
- RAZO weighted shift knob
- Energy Suspension urethane shifter bushing/coupler
- BMW M-Power style pedals

- AEM cold air intake
- ceramic coated / heat wrapped 4-2-1 header (ebay) w/ copper gasket
- modified OBX 2.25" stainless mid-pipe (fitted a 27" glasspack)
- stainless glasspack aka "ebay hi-flow catalytic converter"
- Maremont "turbo style" muffler
- custom fabbed "silencer" baffled tip (to control rice-like sounds)

- NGK Iridium IX-series spark plugs
- 10.2mm triple-core spark plug wires
- Mallory HyFire VI-A capactive discharge ignition
- MSD Blaster SS E-core style external coil
- Crane Cams modified distributor cap & rotor

- Mobil-1 oil in the motor
- GM "Syncromesh" fluid in the transaxle

- VIS Racing carbon fiber hood (JDM Si/ZC style) w/ B-Quiet H-liner
- amber corner lights
- black halo projectors (w/ quality German H1 bulbs/no blue coatings)
- OEM 90-91 Si Recaro seats recovered in black leatherette w/ extra padding
- custom fabbed seat brackets
- Si cluster w/ indiglo gauges
- ebay special "Type R" floor mats (with Type R badges removed)
- "SilBlade" silicone wiper blades & new PPG windshield

- basic Kenwood CD player & Pioneer 3-way 6.5" coaxials (for now)

Parts that I have, but haven't been installed yet:

- Brembo rotors for 91EX4dr/DA brakes
- POR20 exhaust coating
- Some custom made TSX-look-alike tails (in progress)
- Who knows... the basement/attic are starting to look like junkyards...

Future plans:
- VW Silverstone Grey Metallic paint job
- WW kit with mesh painted semi-gloss black
- New factory "H" hood emblem
- wrap full interior in black leatherette like the seats
- tasteful stainless exhaust tip & doing rear section POR20 then black
- Custom red TSX-like tails or Prelude 97-01 OEM
- Painted (possibly shaved) center garnish with OEM 2k "CIVIC" emblem

- Mugen HD rubber bushings in entire suspension
- JimFab crossmember
- New upr&lwr ball joints (Moog/Moog or Moog/aftermarket camber adj)

- DA trailing arms w/ 9.5" discs
- 15/16 MC w/ brace & 4040 proportioning valve
- Stainless brake lines

Then, when my damn garage is finished being built...
The most important thing of all can be taken care of..

- A properly built motor: probably DOHC ZC or D16A6 (I like D-series)
- Considering a Turbo w/ TurboEdit ECU (once the ROM is mature)
- ZC OEM LSD tranny or ZC w/ Quaife

So.. here are some pics...

Here is a pic of the color I want to have the Civic painted....

I'd like to go for a full color change, painted mirrors, etc etc..
with a shaved antenna and drip rails...

OK .. well, while we are on the subject.. I will post up the pics and specs on my other beloved little machines that are part of this wonderful blended mechanical/experience-design hobby of ours that I respectfully like to call "art" ...

Perhaps someone will get a kick out of it.

I would be curious to see what non-Honda projects all you Civic gurus out there are working on. So post yours up too alongside your EF

----

(spokes are a little dirty but u get the idea )

------

Here is my other car.. this is one really gonna be "the" project.. it's been in storage f-o-r-e-v-e-r .. since i havent had any place to work on it (which should be changing)...

it's a 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster repro'ed in fiberglass .. with a steel subframe glassed into the body that mounts onto a VW air cooled chassis...

Mine is built using 1970 Beetle chassis.. 69+ is preferable, due to the IRS rear end.. you get a pair of axles with 4 CV joints instead of the 2 joint "swing axle" style used before..

Don't mind the single carb in the pic.. I have a pair of 2bbl Dellorto DRLA 40's in my basement

It will get some some exotic air cooled drivetrain...
with as much HP-producing WW-II airplane technology as possible

But for now there is a lot of work left to do and many things are undecided...

It isn't exactly driveable yet the body is not permanently mounted...
etc etc

Anyways.. I won't bore with too many more details..

Here is a pic of what it looks like now:

When it's finished.. it should be somewhat similar to this...

Here's what's underneath the fiberglass.. a VW pan..and an additional steel subframe..

---
I used to have a really cool scooter. It was pretty damn modded out too. Someone stole it from my backyard just as soon as everything was "well sorted" and functioning properly....

---
Here is my motorsickle. A friend of mine (bike mechanic) is working on rebuilding it.

Some might say it is a classic. Most people just think its old and stupid.

Personally, I am a big fan of it's very groundbreaking period design.

1986 Suzuki GSXR-750R (Limited Edition, "double R" aka the first "Type R" )

there were about 1,000 made of this particular model.. it comes with a dry clutch, solo seat, and other fun stuff stock.

The 1986 GSXR was the first USDM Japanese race replica ..

I am the apprentice of a very seasoned hobbyist mechanic who worked for some time at a specialty shop (amongst other places) specializing in air-cooled VWs. All work on the above vehicles was performed by us, in the driveway... with the exception of the THM400 tranny in the Cadillac, and the GSXR rebuild.

I am very thankful for his guidance and assistance in the execution of these projects.

I feel that these particular projects represet my personal designs in the various hobby vehicle genres.

Well. Thanks for actually looking at all this junk.

I look forwarding to hearing what you guys think, as this is the first time I have documented/shared any of my projects.

You should've put a 56k warning in the title

Phew...that's quite a collection of projects you got there! The Civic almost doesn't fit in (especially around the Porsche )! I'm lovin' that Caddy too...

Definitely keep us updated on the progress of the Civic! That thing is really nice now, I'll be afraid of it when you get it finished

Re: Pics of my beloved 89 hatch and other non-honda projects

Despite what some people may think/say, the EF and EG make outstanding project cars. The handling is utterly ridiculous for a FWD.

I am fond of the 88-91's transformers-like styling.

I bought the Civic from a co-worker for $440, for which I am very grateful.

And to put it simply.. you can't fuck with Honda.

They are simple, efficient and RELIABLE.

They love to be modified and still make fantastic daily drivers even when they are all tricked out.

Re: Pics of my beloved 89 hatch and other non-honda projects

Thanks for the positive words, guys. They are most appreciated and very encouraging.

I found the horn button on eBay from a seller overseas.

They seem to be a bit hard to find. I waited patiently and checked eBay constantly, until I found it.

I had to have the H horn button and the trim ring to make the steering wheel not look like such an aftermarket hack.

I'm very happy with the button/ring. They make the wheel look much better.

ScienceOfSpeed.com has a similar item but charges an arm and a leg.. it is a red "H" logo Momo/Sparco horn button. I think it's an OEM NSX-R item.. or similar.

http://www.scienceofspeed.com/produc...d/Sparco_Ring/

The silver/red seems a bit harder to integrate into a matching design.

It seems that Momo made various logo horn buttons for a period of time?, but had to stop due to licensing?

Tiny steering wheels really rock in Civics

Once I had the seat and steering wheel in there... I swear they started issuing commands to me while I was driving... like... "Buy more parts... Feed me..." "Drive faster..." "I need more hop up parts..."

The combo of good seating / short shifter / small steering wheel really change the personality of the car.

The Daihatsu is neat. Never seen one of those around here (no USDM equivalent I don't think) ... How much does it weigh?
