Differential help please

I have just changed the axle seals on my 88 tbird.
I removed the 2 floating pinion gears so I could remove the c clips to slide the axles out.

Now, I can't seem to get the 2 gears back in. I can get one in no problem by rotaing one wheel and it sucks into the pinion area, but I can't get the second one in.
I hope you understand what I am talking about and I would appreciate any input you guys could give me.

It seems so simple yet I can't get it to work.
