98 cav timing belt
anyone know how long these things last before they had better be changed and not stranded on the road? most cars are 50k unless it is an escort (40k) or Chevette. dealer says 400 bucks and a hard job. have shop manuals and tools. better to take it to a dealer?how long these things last

Hi Tambrose I Am Replacing My Timing Chain As We Speak. Its A Moderate To Difficult Job. Having The Right Tools Is Essential. A Repair Manual For Your Car Is Priceless. My Car Has 119,000 Miles On It And The Chain Broke!!. In The Process I Have To Change The Head Because 4 VALVES Were Bent As A Result. So I Would Suggest Changing It Pretty Soon To Avoid More Costly Repairs.

most timing chains will outlast the motor where belts on the otherhand are notorious for failing. i've yet to see a chain fail on a 2.2 thats not to say it doesn't ever happen just not too likely. if you do change it i suggest raising the car on jackstands removing the front right tire and inner fender liner this will make it 100 times easier to gain access to the front of the engine. you might as well replace the water pump and front oil seal while everythings apart. good luck
