I was wondering if a 3100 would fit in my 93 Grand Am Se which has a Quad Ohc 2.3 in it. If it will/wont what would i need to do. Would the swap work if i change the motor mounts. What other bigger motors would swap in. Any info at all would be great.

Re: Engine swap
if you want to do this for performace reasons the 3400 would be a better choose over the 3100, or better yet you could swap an LGO into there since you already have a quad

I am doing it because the motor that was in it was ran out of oil. And i was offered a 3100 with a cam and drilled fuel injectors for $200.

Re: Engine swap
A $200 engine is hard to beat if it runs and doesn't smoke.

yes but i had heard that the 3100 is a pos. And that the 2.3 actually has more hp. Is this true?

Re: Engine swap
yea the 3100 is nothing special, the 2.3 HO has more power 175-180 range, the W41 version has 190hp and the LO has 150 or 155, and the SOHC has something like 120 or less. the 3100 is rated at 150-155 but has alot more torgue somewhere around 170 whereas the quad has say 160 at the most. But the quad has a bigger aftermarket for it so the quad is the best oh the two chooses.

Re: Engine swap
hi, i saw this is an old post but i thought it would be better to use this one rather than start a new one asking the same questions......
ok..95 grand am, quad 4, motor is toast(ran with no oil) i have access to a complete grand am parts car that was hit in the rear.. it has a 3.1.. what all do i need off of the parts car to make it work? can i just drop the cradle from the parts car and switch it? what about the wireing? I'm not really worried about preformace on this car i just want it running again.... |

Re: Engine swap
I don't believe the transmissions will match up, so you will have to replace CVs as well. You might want to check the struts, radiator and wiring harness. Any differences in these things and you are better off swapping then as well. You will need to swap the ECM over.

hey,
is there any reason i cant swap the whole cradle, whith the engine, tranny, cv's, suspension, and anything else bolted to it? and of couse the harness and computer... the only reason i want to do this swap is i'm having problems finding a quad four engine that is resonably priced, or a whole parts car for that matter, but i know where i can get several parts grand am's with 3.1...if i get the same year of car the swap should be no big deal, right? someone also told me that the 3.1's last better and are more dependable, and since this is my sisters car i dont want to be working on it all the time... Re: Engine swap
Since I have never had any experience with your year, I can't say for sure, but I don't see why not. As to the dependability of the 3100... All I have had is a quad4.

Re: Engine swap
if your looking to build a quick car, then go with a DOHC quad, but The 3100 is more than sufficient for daily drivig. Plus stock for stock, it will "feel" faster since it generates its power at "daily driving" rpms.
