Oil Change for a 96 integra GSR

I am a new Integra GSR owner and I need to get an oil change but I don't know what I should do. What does everyone suggest I should do? Go to a place that does it for 20 bucks? Go to Jiffy Lube for 30 bucks? Go to a dealer? Or learn how to do it myself? Also I have been reading that integra's run best with 5w-30 Mobile 1 synthetic oil? Is that the oil I should use. Any help would be appreciated? I mostly drive my integra between 3,000 and 6,000 RPMs but when I need to I go up to 7,500-8,000 RPMs. I hope this hasn't been asked too much and if so I am sorry about this.

It all depends on you. If you like DIY, then change it, if you'd rather pay a little more just take it to a check up place, and where you take it probably doesnt make too much of a difference as long as they put in the right oil, and the oil also depends where you live and the conditions and temperature and what not. I use 5w-30 high mileage

Well I live in Seattle so moderate temperature. What brand of 5W-30 do you use?

Its a little warmer here though, so I could probly get away with 10w 30. its castrol GTX high mileage, but a lot of companies probly have there own out. Valvoline would be good too.

Re: Oil Change for a 96 integra GSR

I use nothing other than Amsoil and I change mnine myself. The thing to look for at the quicky places are that they will spin on a cheap filter, and no matter how good the oil is it is useless without a good filter, The two top filters on the market right now are the K&N oil filter and the Amsoil filter. Both are about the same, they both trap particles down to .010 micron I think and the amsoil filter has a anit drain back valve to keep the dirty oil from draining back into the motor after the motor is shut off.

let me know if you need any Amsoil I have a hook up

Re: Oil Change for a 96 integra GSR

you can get just filters but if your gonna get a filter why not just go ahead and do it your self. and wtteg: all oil filters that are made after 1970 have the anti drain back valve. the reason for this change around 1970 is because thats when cars started using 100% filtered oil. this means that all oil after it leaves the oil pump goes straight to the filter and then to the main journals. in the fifties it was common to have as low as 40% filtered oil. as far as what type of oil to use, in seattle i would go with a 10w-30 or a 20w-50. this will give you a thicker oil at low temps. if you look in your owners manual it will give you a scale of tempratures that correspond to different weight oil. as far as brand, i would stay away from penzoil, castrol, and such especially if you let it go more than 3000 miles or so. the reason being that those brands are wax based oil. this wax based oil if used for too long the contaminates make it turn to sludge. i would use like valvaline, amsoil, and mobil. there are more out there those are just examples.

Re: Oil Change for a 96 integra GSR

Alright so I am pretty much thinking about doing it myself today. I am gonna buy an amsoil filter and mobil 1 oil at 5W-30 since that is what the manual recommends. Should I go with regular oil or synthetic oil? What is the difference?

i would deffinately go with the syn. it has far better qualities over regular oil. regular oil starts to break down at around 3k miles. as to syn oil takes alot longer to break down. and syn. oil does not oxidize like regular oil, in which oxidation can help to deteriorate the inside of your engine over time. go with synthetic, your engine will appreciate you for it.

crazy story shy i change my own oil. i over heard this guuy that took his car to walmart to get the oil changed, apparently walmart had mistakenly drained his transmission oil and put 4 more quarts of oil in his engine. totalling 8 quarts of oil in his engine and none in his tranny. also i took my car to super lube one day when visiting my parents and my dad offered to pay to have my oil changed, i took the offer and had my oil changed. when i got home my dad noticed that i was leaking oil all over his driveway. long story short, super lube had stripped my drain plug. and i had noticed that someone before me had already tapped my oil pan, so i was SOL, had to get and install a new $100 oil pan b/c of super lube. now i do it myself

Yeah those are pretty crazy stories. That's what I worry about when going to those oil change places. I am afraid they are either ripping me off or doing a bad job on changing my oil. Thanks everyone for your input on this subject. You all have helped me out a lot. Now to see if my parents have something to jack my car up with. Oh another quick question is it easy to take off the GSR's oil filter? I read in the manual that you need a special tool to get it off? Is this true?

Re: Oil Change for a 96 integra GSR

Hold up I just called an acura dealer and he told me that the marker filters don't always fit and that I should by an acura oil filter. Is this true?
