1994 Explorer with engine knocking?

I am looking at buying a '94 Explorer but it's engine knocks. Can anyone tell me what casues this and how much it would cost to repair? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Unhappy Re: 1994 Explorer with engine knocking?

Very possibly you are hearing lifter "tap/tick". One of the reasons they do that is from a low oil level. With the hood open, it should sound like it's coming from the top of the engine.

HOWEVER, there is a much more ominous sound that comes from the bottom of the engine. A true "knocking" sound could be a bearing that's seriously considering hari-kari.

If you're sure it's coming from the top of the engine, an oil change (possibly a lifter adjustment) should fix it. Otherwise, BEWARE! n:

Once possiblity. Just a guess. Listen closely to the Idler pulley for the serpintine belt. I have heard that the bearing goes out on these and it sounds like a knocking sound. How many miles on this one?
