1994 Explorer with engine knocking?
I am looking at buying a '94 Explorer but it's engine knocks. Can anyone tell me what casues this and how much it would cost to repair? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Very possibly you are hearing lifter "tap/tick". One of the reasons they do that is from a low oil level. With the hood open, it should sound like it's coming from the top of the engine.
HOWEVER, there is a much more ominous sound that comes from the bottom of the engine. A true "knocking" sound could be a bearing that's seriously considering hari-kari. If you're sure it's coming from the top of the engine, an oil change (possibly a lifter adjustment) should fix it. Otherwise, BEWARE! |

Once possiblity. Just a guess. Listen closely to the Idler pulley for the serpintine belt. I have heard that the bearing goes out on these and it sounds like a knocking sound. How many miles on this one?
