New Engines For 98 TransAm?

What Engines would fit in a 1998 Trans Am that would give me at least 350 or more horsepower without exceeding $4,000? Also, why is it that the LS1 engine is around $8,000 and puts out only 315 horsepower when you could by another crate engine for only 5 or 6k with an output of at least 400 horses?

because its sold by pontiac and they wanna make good profit off of it...if all those crate engines were sold in the TA they would be about 10 gs...and if u know of crate engines with 400 horse for 5g's im sure ull find a 350 horse for 4g's...however whats wrong with ur TA with 315 horse ur insane to spend that much for just 35 more horse...throw headers and exhuast on there and ur at 350 and you'll only spend little over a grand

Re: New Engines For 98 TransAm?

A brand new LS1 for 8K??? Hell no, I'd rather take one out of a wrecked F-body. I've got a buddy putting one in his V6 this week as we speak, and it's running him about $2500 for the engine, tranny, wiring, and installation.

Now, he brought up a good point. For that price, you could build a better engine with the current LS1 that you have.

So in essence, you have an LS1, an LS6, and a crate engine to choose from...

The reason i would like to put in a new engine is b\c the Trans Am i got it a little over 90k miles and if i plan on keeping this car for a very long time and i would like it to run at top effeciency when i race. Plus, if i start putting upgrades and performance parts on it now, when the miles get to high, it would be a pain to have to transfer those and some of them may lose their use. I dunno, i have always wanted to customize my car and i think the first place i should start is the engine.
