speed and abs sensors

My anti-lock and PI brak lights are on and my speed ometer does not work below 60 rmps. I had the codes checked and got a P0500 speed sensor malfuction. Has anyone ever changed the speed sensor or the abs sensor? Should I replace both or just the speed sensor?

Before anything is replace you should check the wiring and the connectors at the sensors.

We already checked the wiring and cleaned the sensors. The lights are still on and the speedo still does not work

I'm not sure if the 99 is similar or not, but my brother had this problem with his 99. The sensor that went on his truck was the Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is located on the top of the rear axle. This sensor was the easiest to change, so he chose to do that one first, and it happened to be the right choice. As far as the other sensor goes, he didn't have to change it, so I don't know exactly where it is and what is involved in changing it. Hope this helps a little bit.

I have the same problem with my 1999 Dakota. I have purchased a new speed sensor, but have not looked under the truck to see how hard this will be to replace. I have tried looking online for an installation procedure, or diagrams, but have not been able to locate these. Can anyone help me, please?

Hmm... You say the "Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is located on the top of the rear axle", turned out to be the problem.
I own a 1999 dodge Dakota, V6, automatic transmission, and 2 wheel drive. I looked into changing this "speed sensor" as a few other people told me that was most likely the problem. But the speed sensor on mine, at least the one the guy at the dealer sold me for about $20, screws into the transmission. I changed this, and still have the same problem, ABS and BRAKE lights on constantly, and speedometer sometimes works, but other times just falls to 0 and sits there. The speedo problem seems to be worse when I am going under 40mph.
This problem seems to have started when I parked on a hill and applied the parking break, which I rarely need to use. Then upon releasing the brake the lights and speedo problem started!

I just replaced mine and it fixed the problems you mentioned. Speedometer, abs and brake lights. It was simple to replace. With mine, I had to remove 2 nuts, the 1st 13mm and the second 15mm. After that it took a pair of channel lock pliers to pull the old out, and a hammer to gently tap the new in. Getting the new one in was the toughest part.

It is located on the top of the rear diff toward the front of the truck.

Thank you very much. Did you buy this new part at the dealer, or is it available from retail auto parts stores? I don't suppose you know the part number, or how much it cost?
And just wondering, do you have auto transmission or manual?

Im not sure what the part number. If i still have the box, Ill look when I get home. I got it from the dealer and it cost $37 and some change. I think they called it the rear wheel speed sensor. I posted a picture someone took below ..this is from a Ram but it looks very similar.

I asked for a rear wheel speed sensor at Autozone, but the gentleman didn't know what I was talking about.
